    OK a strange one this.

When I am typing I will be in the middle of a sentence and the cursor is activated and all of a sudden I am typing in a completely different line.

I'm not using the buttons on the keyboard and have disabled the touch pad (I thought I might be accidentally hitting it) but it doesn't seem to have helped.....

I know I am not touching the red button in the center of the keyboard.

Any thoughts what it might be?

    Thanks!

P.S> It happend twice whilst I was typing that above.

You know.... every laptop I've ever used does this. I've decided that it's me where my wrist touches the touch pad.

Most likely your thumb touched the touchpad. I usually disable it and just use the eraser head.

I thought exactly the same mate. I have disabled the Thumb Pad altogether and it's still happening. It's really strange but bloody annoying. A couple of times it's highlighted the text and I've deleted over a load of stuff that I've typed. Almost as annoying as accidentally hitting the tab forward and backward keys next to the cursor keys!!

It have experienced this on both my T42 and T60. I also have the touchpad disabled as I can't stand to use it. It is an annoying phenomenon, especially if you don't touch type. Surely someone knows about this and there must be a fix.

    Try this:

Control Panel > Mouse > UltraNav tab > Trackpoint settings > Uncheck the box that says "Enable Press-to-Select"

I've been having the same problem. I have upped my palm sensitivity to max and Press to select is not enabled.

The typing thing is really irritating and takes a lot from one's experience. I notice the touch pas is humidity sentitive and we live in a humid area but it is winter and the humidity is lower.

Every laptop that I have owned ... both PCs and Macs ... have experienced this annoyance. I am at a loss as to how the cursor seemingly jumps from one line to another. With the keypad lock , it still manages to do it. I thought maybe it might have been to some fat-fingering combination of letters and some of the control keys. Just at a loss. Would love to find a solution to this ......

What I can't come to a conclusion on with the touchpads .. locked or unlocked the cursor jumping will occur ; different OS's doesn't matter ; different touchpad vendors .... still happens.

I do notice it more prevalent on the Macs though. Even to the point of total deletion of text .... that will certainly get your attention.

OK, I have to admit this happens to me all the time on my t61p. Oddly enough, I don't remember it happening on my lenovo 3000, but I don't think I did as much typing on it. Also it doesn't seem to happen when I am typing into HTML editor boxes like this one. For me, it occurs in Word. I don't remember it happening in vs2008 which is a development environment.

Renee, that is an interesting point regarding only happening in Word. From my mind I can only remember it happening in Office apps such as word or outlook also. You might be on to something. I will keep watch!

How can we start a poll on this? I think it would be very informative.

Hey all, found this page as I was going mental with my cursor relocating whilst typing. I too have been suffering with the problem, although it isn't just office apps (although you tend to type more in those than anywhere else so will be more noticeable there.

I too had tried disabling the touchpad to no avail. Finally, I noticed that it never occurred with an external mouse plugged in (my laptop is set to disable both touchpad and pointing stick when it detects an external mouse). So, I checked through all of the dell mouse/touchpad configuration program and realised something I never knew before. Not only does the touchpad have the "tap to click" function enabled but so does the pointing stick!!!!

As soon as I disabled "tap to click" on the pointing stick the problem dissappeared (HOORAY!). I have even enabled tap to click on the touchpad again (but not the stick) and have not had the problem reoccur.

Hope this helps some of you resolve the most annoying problem ever!

Hmmmm. I wonder if the touchpad is just picking up vibrations?

I just did a fresh install of vista 64 and with vista standard drivers, the phenomina was awful. When I installed the Lenovo drivers for the touchpad and ultraNav the huge majority of the problems went away.
