Hey,
I just received my T61P, and I love it. The screen is perfect and the keyboard is the best I've ever had. Can't wait to try Civ4 on it, should look wonderful on this display.
Unfortunately it hangs up frequently, I got so many BSODs with the default installation that I hardly managed to install Firefox. The box it came in had been somewhat abused while in the mail, had a hole the size of a boot (I don't even want to think about how that happened) in the side, but the box that contained the laptop itself seemed all right, and the laptop itself looks perfect. Anyway I decided to try a clean install of XP instead, but after completing the installation (without trouble) I can't even boot it up in safe mode. Going to try some other versions tonight just to see if I can make it run.
I've been running memtest on it for a while, the first pass completed with no errors at least, and I'll see if there's a newer bios around that could possibly sort things out, although I doubt it.
Now to the questions:
1) Do you have any good diagnostic tools to recommend? Even if it's nothing I can do about it myself, I have no intention of cracking this beauty open, it's nice to know more about what's wrong.
2) Could this be something other than a hardware failure?
3) Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How long did it take for Lenovo to return a working laptop? I'm in a hurry right now since I'm moving abroad in about a week, and this laptop is absolutely necessary for me to keep working from there...
Thanks for all and any help.![]()
edit: I'd kind of bothers me that my first post here had to be a request for help with a busted laptop. I've been reading this forum while waiting for it to arrive and it looks like a nice forum. Guess that's life though.
edit 2: Running the hd diagnostics in bios to see if it finds anything.

Step one would be to run Memtest86 and give the ram a clean bill of health.
Next try would either be to clean up the os or do a clean install and reinstall all drivers.
Next would be to do the clean install again, this time leaving out the Lenovo utilities and only installing basic drivers.
Next would be to physically remove the turbomem card (if you have one) as this may also be causing problems.
Last would be to return it to the mfgr for defect repair
