A notebook that gets hot during gaming is normal. Which game are you playing?

Yeah, those games would produce excessive heat, especially from the vents. Your computer is normal. :)

I don't think laptop coolers would be that beneficial with a T61p. The vents are all on the side and back anyway, none on the bottom. That it heats up means it's doing its job..

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I don't. In fact, the heat doesn't really bother me.

You could download tpfancontrol and set it to run the fans at a higher speed then the embedded controller will go. That's what I do on mine. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=17715&start=840

That's the link to the thread regarding the latest version of tpfancontrol. If you download the program, settings of 6, 7, or 64 (which runs the fan at an unregulated speed) are all faster then what the embedded controller will go to.

I do believe there is some benefit in laptop coolers, but only for the long term life of your laptop. Laptop coolers are made to suck air away from the bottom of your notebook and push it out the back or sides, depending on the cooler. That extra air flow is designed to draw heat from the bottom of the notebook and does not need to be located near the pre-existing fans and vents. In the short term, notebooks have safety temperatures where it will shut down automatically if it does, for some reason, overheat. I like keeping my temperature as low as possible to extend the life of my equipment. I don't know if it actually has any long term effects, but it does make sense to me :).
