    I just ordered a T61p (T9300, 4GB RAM, nvidia 128MB).
I would like to know if anybody has installed and is using Windows Server 2003 or 2008 (32bit) as their primary OS ? I assume it will use all 4GB RAM.

I mainly work on scientific applications - I dont want vista or a 64bit OS due to compatibility reasons. So if I want the newest code-kernel then Windows server 2003/2008 32bit is the OS of choice.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The Windows Servers are def. faster than their comsumer counterparts, but NO 32-bit OS can support more than 3GB.

I did read all the discussion on NBR about the 4GB RAM support. Here's what I understand:

On a 32bit Win XP/Vista OS - only 3GB is "visible" because of reserved memory addresses used by the OS for hardware etc.

On 32 bit Win Server OS - All memory is visible (upto the max memory limit) because of a different addressing scheme used.

On 64bit - Different story. No such "visibility" limit.

    Am I correct ?

    thanks.

in a nutshell you are correct. big differences between server 2003 and server 2008. you should consider xp pro if your running 2003. 2008 has been pretty sweet so far, depending what you need it for.

However, windows server is 36-bit and is able to recognize 4Gb ram.
    Try this.
