I apologize in advance if this has been asked before but is there a step-by-step guide to doing a fresh Windows XP install for a T61p?

    Thanks very much.

Set BIOS SATA controller to compatibility mode.

Put in XP discs and follow prompts, including activation.

Install service pack 3 and run windows update.

Install drivers and applications you want from Lenovo's website.

I usually do it alphabetical. It's always worked for me.

Really? I was sure there was an order in which drivers should be installed after a fresh OS install.

I wouldn't lie to you, but I can shade the truth with the best of them. :D

Why compat mode versus AHCI? Because most people don't have a 3.5" floppy in this day and age?

Some XP discs won't have the AHCI drivers, which will cause the installation to not see the hard drive.

None of the Microsoft XP disks do as far as I am aware. I was just checking to see if there was some other underlying reason. Thanks.

You can slipstream the drivers in, but I don't think most XP discs have them. Perhaps a XP SP3 disc may.

There are 3rd parties that have added sata drivers to xp install discs.

I too installed XP on my T61 when I purchased it new, along with Vista and laster added seven, but to be honest, I haven't booted into XP in years. A good T61 will run 7 so well that you probably won't want to use xp, but thats just my opinion.
