So I bought a t61p a few weeks right before they announced the new models with LED screens.

I have a samsung screen. It sucks. It's blatantly grainy and very dim, at all times. So, is the LG model any brighter, and would I be able to (pay for) an upgrade to an LED backlit screen?

    Thanks for any insight.

i know exactly how you feel about that Samsung panel. I got one on my T61 as well and it really upset me. the LG isn't that much better though.

Here's an option for you. Send it to ScreenTek.com and they can repolarize the screen for you (basically make it glossy). They claim it's the same technology that Dell, Sony, etc use to bring you Trulife and X-brite. It costs $100 plus shipping.

I did this to my T61 and it made a HUUUUUGE difference. Vertical viewing angles improved by about 15-20 degrees and the contrast went up as well. Text was more than readable... very sharp. I just ordered a T400 for the LED screen, but I'm interested to see how much I gain from LED vs my glossy modded T61. It should arrive here on 9/10 so I can post pictures if you're interested.

Check my previous postings for more detailed threads on ScreenTek. Maybe written back in 10/07 to 11/07

I would rather have a grainy screen over a glossy one any day!

:(. I can't *stand* glossy screens to be honest... but pictures would be massively appreciated!

Your best approach is probably to sell the one you got and buy the one you want.

Exactly what I was going to say. If you are really that unhappy with the screen this is probably the best approach, since replacing the screen could be difficult and expensive. As mentioned screentek could be an option.

For the record, I have a T61p with the LG screen and I am very happy with it.

Is the LG screen actually brighter than the LG screen? As for selling... you mean sell my laptop? I just got it, but yet, it is out of any restocking period and I paid a lot for it to take a loss on it already. The difficulty of replacement is not an issue. I've had several laptops as far apart as they will go without desoldering with no problems, but the expense to that could be more prohibitive.

Anyway, thanks again for any and all suggestions.

What do you think I could get for a slightly used, beautifully cared for 2.5, 3gb, 160gb, WSXGA+, WWAN-enabled, DVDRW, 3 year *accidental* coverage warranty (so... they could drop it and get a new one)....?

Hard to say. Look on eBay to see what similar machines are going for. It's a lot like a car, once you drive it off the lot it takes a hit in value. People considering used are already looking for a deal. A lot will depend on who you sell it to.
