    Respected elders

1- I just bought (in Singapore) a new T61p (6460-A27, T7700 , 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM,160GB hard disk-5400rpm, VistaBusiness) and wonder if its feasible and worth to replace CPU with T9300 (Penryn 45microns) or one must replace motherboard (Planar) as well ?

    I hope the T9300 maybe cooler(better battery life ?)

2- As new T500/W500/W700 announced just few days after I bought it, I feel a bit peeved.

    Thanks for any tips

Only if you're doing something where you push your CPU is it likely you'll notice a difference in the CPUs.

To be honest, mobile processors are much more expensive than their desktop counterparts, I don't think it would be worth it to upgrade (even if your laptop supports it).

That's the way it goes some times. :)

And even then its still not really worth it. I mean youre looking at waht? A $300 processor upgrade for 100mhz, maybe 5-10 mins more of battery life, and a small increase in L2 cache with diminishing returns? NO.

    Thanks - guys !

Please help with these 2 points :

Is it worth to get a SSD 64GB or 128GB (SLC) i/o 7200 rpm disk for better access times ? Does SSD work with T61p (6460-A27) ?

    Instead of default resolution 1920 x 1600 can I run always at 1680 x 1050 (Vista Business) ?

    Thanks!

it will run cooler, you will not be able to tell performance differences (unless using benchmarks), and the battery life difference will negligible.

as to money its up 2 u

a SSD disk costs- will check out SSD thread in NBR<grin>

Yes, money IS the main problem <grin>

I think if money is an issue, then you should just go with the 7200 drive. The SSD is good, but it's a lot more costly and smaller. Stick with the 7200.

Thanks phaam - appreciate your advice.

I searched NBR for which disk to get - saw no mention of WD (Western Digital), saw some recommend Hitachi 7200K.
Which WesternDigital would be as quiet as the Hitachis ?

    Thanks

I think the WD 160GB and 320GB 7200rpm black series is pretty close to the Hitachi 7200rpm drives in noise level. Some people have complained about some clicking type seeking noise. I have the 100GB 7200 rpm hitachi it has some of this too. I have the 320GB WD Black on order so I guess we'll see about noise.

Not unless you want it to look blurry. LCDs run best at their native resolution.
