    Hi Folks,

I have a new T61p running Vista Business that now beeps - one long and two short - each time I start it up.

I know this error means that the BIOS - version 2.21 (7LETC1WW) - isn't happy... although for now at least the machine does boot up. I ran the Lenovo PC-Doctor Diagnostics and discovered that in the Parallel Port Test Category, the Command and Data Port LPT 1 failed.

I don't believe I have a hardware problem, so plan to simply update the BIOS when a new version is available, hoping that will solve the problem. Does anyone have a suggestion... or perhaps a solution?

    Thanks!

    Jeff

This may sound annoyingly obvious, but have you gone through the BIOS settings for a way to disable the beeps?

Disable the sound? Please don't. You know those BIOS beeps are special "codes" that translate to different error messages.

For ThinkPad BIOS, 1 long, 2 short = System board failure; Video adapter problem; LCD assembly failure

If you bothered to read his post, I pointed him in that direction because he seems to know what the source of the problem is and doesn't seem to be bothered by it.

Well, he specifically said he doesn't believe he has hardware problem and hoping a BIOS update will stop the beep, even though both BIOS error code and Lenovo PC-Doctor are telling him otherwise. He didn't say he is not bothered by it. For the record, I did read his post completely before I made that reply.

thanks for your replies, stewie and bog.

i still don't know what the problem is, but i guess i can live with it for now... although of course it would be ideal to fix it, so i don't end up with a bigger problem down the road.

    best,

    jeff

Have you tried running the ThinkVantage maintinence test?
That might help you identify a problem with your machine if there is one.

"Parallel Port"? is your on a dock? Don't think T61 has a Parallel Port built-in. Stil have warranty? Get Lenovo to help.

As mentioned, I ran the comprehensive Lenovo PC-Doctor, and identified the problem: Command and Data Port LPT 1 failed. This failure is consistent with the beep code of one long and two short beeps that I receive at startup.

I'm not using a docking station.

I called Lenovo support, but was not at all impressed with the technical knowledge of the person I spoke to.

I used Diskeeper's Boot-time Defrag prior to the occurence of this problem and am now wondering if this process corrupted my boot manager, even though I performed a chkdsk first.

    Any suggestions are much appreciated!

    Jeff

Maby it's time to do a reboot?

    Save your data and reboot.

    That might work.
