I got my t61p 3 days ago and it worked fine. Until yesterday after I installed company of heroes, my laptop started to run constantly. I deleted the game and the problem persists. Any ideas why this would happen?

    100 gig 7200 rpm

I heard it was loud, but it worked silently for me for the first few days.

if it went silent before even when under intense disk activity; and now it is loud; i am guessing you have a bad HDD; (almost) Dead HDD usually went downhill after high disk activity; such as when installing large amount of software... just my guess..

Depending on the manufacturer you can download programs from their respective websites and run some basic diagnostic tests to make sure that the hard drive is not dying on you. You can also run Microsoft's CHKDSK command to check the drive for errors.

    Good luck.

Use PC-Doctor to test your hard drive.

I had a hell of a time getting my machine to cooperate between Vista trying to defrag and then backup over 50 GB worth of information and Lenovo's software trying to do the same. The harddrive would not stop running, especially right after startup. I eventually got the software to stop monopolizing my harddrive by turning off indexing, turning off auto-backup settings, and making defrags user-controlled. It will take a bit of messing around with Lenovo's software and even more time spent tweaking Vista.

As for the harddrive being loud, it was actually fairly silent, but the light was flashing on and I could hear the light clicking and whirring of it in action. If the sounds are so loud that you can hear them over a typing keyboard, a room fan or moderate ambient noise, you might want to check your disk. It should not be loud, even under heavy use.

Vista does enjoy indexing. For those that don't care for it (and in a laptop its use may be called into question for some) you can easily disable it. It's a quick Google search and may solve some of the noise issues.
