Recently I upgraded memory on my 1 week old T61p from 1GB (Hynix 2*512M) to 4GB (Geil 2*2GB).
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144066

Surprisingly, I noticed that my system is taking longer to boot. To eliminate any guess work, I reinstalled Vista Ultimate to factory default condition, downloaded PC Wizard 2008 & compared the Memory Benchmark results.

I'm not sure how to paste the results but I'll try... No luck. I've attached the files below.

As you can see in the RAM Benchmark, the CPU Bus speed performance surprisingly degraded after the upgrade. Though, no significant change in the performances appeared in the Memory Global Benchmark Test.

    Kindly advise!

    Thank you!

    this is rather strange.

one thing i notice is you have said you installed 4 GB -- your infotool claims your laptop just has 2 GB installed.

is it possible that one of these ram sticks is broke ?
and since you had 2 x512mb you had the dual channel option working. if one of your ram sticks is broke or not inserted correctly the dual channel feature does not work, and you may loose around 5-10% performance.
Try researching if your ram is installed correctly and working as it should.

When your machine is posting, it tests the memory. Having twice the memory, it takes twice to post. After that, depending on your settings in boot.ini i.e. /PAE or /3G the system may behave slower depending on the way it allocate memory.

Also some 2x2GB do not like the intel 945GM/965GM chipsets. They only run up to 533Mhz not the full 667Mhz. I have a dell E1505 that will not take exactly the same GEIL up to 667Mhz but only @ 533. I fixed it with OCZ 800Mhz Memory. It runs on lower latencies and at 667Mhz

Last is the CAS. 2x512Mb will have CAS of 4 or less, while you got a memory with CAS of 5. That will reduce the responsiveness/bandwidth a bit.

Change your memory with this one:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251

    It may run at 4-5-5-15

    or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227247

You will have a more stable system with the first choice, since it has better silicone.

just had another look at your tests, and your ram is running at 333 (x2 ~667mhz) this is correct.

but for some reason your fsb is clocked down. did you do both test running on ac, or have you been working on battery whilst doing the second test? just looks like the speedstepping did clock down your cpu.

Both the tests were done on AC power. The (Vista) Task Manager shows 3069MB of Total Physical Memory.

Has anyone experienced similar problem or know what is going on here? How do I fix it? If I return the RAM, how can I prove it is something to do with the RAM? (Because NewEgg will just run some repeatative test which many not involve the problem I'm facing.

    Please reply.

    Thank you!

I used to have those extended boot issues. I found my boot config had the system test the extended memory. Make sure you have that off. If it's already off, you could turn it one, boot, and then restart and turn it off again. If that doesn't fix it, I don't know how then.

The issue was noticed after the Extended Memory Test, while booting the OS or running other programs.

Well, i'm not exactly a pro like those other guys that posted before, but I know a 32 bit OS can only allocate up to 3 GB of ram, so maybe you should just try 3 gigs instead of paying for 4.

That may be the case but it shouldn't slow down the boot time considerably, I think something in your bios is making it do the full POST as opposed to the minimal. I just installed 4GB's of ram *I know 32bit only sees 3GB* and after it was all said and done, my computer boots just as fast or even faster than my 2GB.
