    Hi, everybody!
I have purchased T61p and unfortunately it came with Sams screen. It has very good brightness and contrast. the images are evenly bright. But it has so poor viewing angles and it is so grainy, that after working with Word or any other white-background applications, I begin suffering from pain in my eyes. I plugged the laptop to my old CRT Viewsonic that proved to be much better, though not so brigth. Is any tools to diminish these negative visual effects?

    appreciate any advice and sharing
    regards

Why not change the background color of Word to something easier on your eyes?

I have the same exact issue. For games and photos the screen is fine but it causes eye strain with black on white text. Keeping your head farther away from the screen seems to help as the screen appears more even this way. I also increased the default font size to help with this. It is an annoying issue.

yep, exactly grimy. Very annoying. I have to either keep sitting in one pose and stare only at the center or change the angle of the screen everytime I move. I will try to chane the background as suggeseted above or will keep on using external monitor as now. Unfortunately the US warranty is not valid in my country and I cannot send it back. The only good think that the gadget didn't cost me a cent as was purchased by my company. :)

changing the background is a good idea. I tried doing this for the web but the pages just seems weird with a different color. At this point im just tired of trying to deal with this, i went through 2 dells bc of their screen problems and then my first t61p had a hardware failure and so it went back. Its no longer worth my time.

I am thinking of selling it and buy Asus m50sv, if things with my eye strain remain. Though for glossy screens it also might be a failure for their reflections. Six months ago I saw Lenovo Y510. It gave so much reflections in the mall, so it was impossible to concentrate on the image itself. As somebody said here - ordering laptop is really miss of hit ...

I thought about that model as well, but in the US asus are not that popular and the only model i was able to see was the G1 from best buy which didnt really do it for me. Plus with the sales plus academic discount plus coupon the lenovo was pretty cheap.

t is also strange with them too. I was considering buying Asus F8SV (Nvidia 8600 Gt) in Bangkok. Being the most expansive that time among other Asus laptops it screen struck me as very dimm, thought on its side there was some budget one with a screen much better. But living in US is of much advantage at least in terms of buying laptops. T61p in HK (that is funny as it is part of china now), the Philippines, Thaiuland and Russia is about $2500 -3000. - makes it much more difficult to jump from one laptop to another.

I have to stick it out as the closest Lenovo is in Russia that will not care for laptop purchased in US. Is it always LG when they replace LCD panel?

No...Some got Samsung...But I don't know if they got the swap because of the grainy looking or another problem.
And this is an international IBM/Lenovo warranty...Why wouldn't they care in Russia?

It would be a drag to get another Samsung aspecially after paying restocking fee. In Russia, as well as in most countries they sell T61p for $2500 (in South-East Asia it is $3000). I doubt they will care for crappy screen, especially it is more expensive in these countries.

There wasn't a restocking fee since the screen was changed under the warranty. And I read someone elling that the tech guy came to his home (on site warranty) with anotehr Samsung LCD but less grainy than the first one.

Could you tell us more about the screen reference ?

    Is it WUXGA 15.4" ?
What is the monitor hardware id ?
(in windows you can find it
    in control panel>system>device manager>monitors
Then chose the your monitor, select details tab and hardware id)

They may change my screen, but I had to go through Hell and back and I think I will be only a handful of people who may have the privilege of having it changed to a possibly just as low-quality display. Technically, the screen is not defective, just of incredibly low-quality. I think both Dell and Lenovo may be trying to get rid of the stock because prices have gone down on the Inspiron, which was stocked with the WSXGA+ with no lower res available and the T61 that I purchased could not be configured to a lower res. I bought my T61 with a coupon which made Lenovo an extraordinarily cheap option, and as a video and photo editor, it was in for evaluation for 2 weeks (difficult when you have tough deadlines) to see if I was accurate with my complaint or simply "subjective". I am running an old Dell right now, waiting for the machine to come back.

My advice - if you edit or game, where the display is key to your hobbies and business, don't get the T61. If you aren't picky at all, then you should be fine with the LCD. Some like it well and some, well, some are sad.

    CMO = Chi Mei Optoelectronics

I got one of them (CMO1520) on an HP 8510p but it was awfully grainy
Good colors good lights but so grainy that I could not stand it more than 2 hours ...

Here are some pics of my T61p Samsung screen.
The screen is good for gaming and other tasks until it is for Word and the web with much of white as a background.
Has anybody tried to change the screen by buying it from other source than Lenovo?

Is it possible to change the screen as a warranty somewhere e.g. Thailand (they have Lenovo center there), if the laptop was bought in USA?

    Should that be grainy?
I'm curious if a monitor calibration would help.

I tried to do it, ut it seems to be unable to make the screen look less grainy and with better viewing angles.

Does anybody know how much LG sreen is?

Find the FRU of the LG panel (I forget it offhand, but I know it's in the link I posted above), and check it out here:

    http://www.screentekinc.com/Lenovo__ThinkPad__T61P-series-laptops-lcd-screens.shtml

Right now it looks like they are selling for between $360 and $425. I would do more research about what the "best" panel is though, I've heard tell that Sony makes a pretty good one too. I can tell you from my own experience with a calibrated, side-by-side comparison, the LG was not $400 better than the Samsung, even if you've got money to throw around. There's a chance that perhaps not all LG's or Samsungs with the same FRU are the same quality, but then it's just a gamble anyway. Let us know if you find a great replacement!

I got my T61 on Monday, and i'm very pleased with everything, but the dreaded screen. I got the Samsung panel sadly and I cannot get the blue tint to go away. It's just such a substandard panel.

Anyway, as an experiment I'm going to try putting in an AU Optronic's panel and see if that reamedies the situation. I will post results once I replace it.

Recently I had a chance to put my hands on the Dell Vostro 1500 since I am a desktop guy..

Tell you this, the screen is not good. The contrast is high, the blacks are poor, doesn't even come close to my Dell S-IPS monitor.

Can't wait for the R61. Will see how the screen stands against my desktop monitor.

I am replacing a Vostro 1500 with my new T61.... and i didn't really find the panel on the Vostro that bad. It's definately better quality than the samsung that they put in some t61's.

My AuO panel should be here thursday, so by afternoon thursday, I'll be able to report. I'll try to post pics afterward, but I dont really have any before shots. and it's currently apart now

Busidor, what model T61 do you have? The are three different LCD panel for that machine : WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA. If you have a WUXGA and are still having eye strain, maybe your prescription is off. BTW, did you buy this machine new or used? Used LCD lose their intensity within months of constant usage...

If I were you I'd resist the temptation to compare. You'll be thoroughly dissapointed even if you happen to get a decent lcd. Laptop TN-panel lcds especially matte ones are no comparison to desktop ones. And in turn, regular TN-panel dekstop LCD will look inferior next to a desktop IPS panel.

just saying - don't get your hopes up :D

It is a new T61p ordered in Lenovo US and brought from US. It has WSXGA screen. It is very bright and eventy lit. Good for gaming, though in DVD its colors struck me as faded away. But it is not a big issue. The real problem is its angles are so poor that in WORD ( that I use the greater part of the day) every slight movement of my head causes the screen darkening and I have to move the screen. It is also so grainy that after a short period of time it becomes hard to keep working. I saw here the same complains about HP. I personally saw something similar in Lenovo c100 and in my friend's SONY that is maybe a bit less grainy.
