My T61p frozen some times when I startup or shout down. Does anyone have this problem? I did a clean vista 64 bit install and disabled that "Hybrid Hard disk power saving" mode.

    true,

A whole list of possibilities but maybe start with a scan of spyware and viruses.

Checked with the Kasp 7.0, no virus or spyware. I checked here, looks like the freeze problem all happened after the startup(with IE or something). Mine at start up when the desktop appears, and at shut down page.

    true,

during the startup or shutdown monitor task manager processes to see which process is running/hanging.

Thank you! But How to see the process when it's freezing? The vista saved any file to the hard disk? Where?

    true,

I am assuming that something is running and the cpu is maxed out to support it......so it you do the alt ctrl del and see if task manager comes on during the "freeze".......an idea.

And, yes, you could go into the F8 start up mode using command line....to see when it freezes.

    Others may have more ideas.

Can you boot in safe mode?..if so then its not a basic driver or default settings.

To identify if a program is freezing during shutdown:

    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del. The Windows screen should display. If so, click Start Task Manager.

    2. On the Application tab, look for an application that is not responding. If all programs appear to be running normally, skip to step 5.

    3. Select the application that is not responding and then click End Task.

    4. If the application fails to respond to the request, you'll see a prompt that allows you to end the application immediately or cancel the end-task request. Click End Now.

    5. Try shutting down or restarting the computer. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, click the Options button to the right of the power and lock buttons, and then click Restart or Shut Down as appropriate.

I can boot in safe mode. Not each time will freeze.

At shutdown, it will just freeze at that "shut down " windows screen. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, nothing happened, just freeze there. The only thing I can do is press the power key a long time to power off.

For Start up freezing, it just freeze at the desktop, press Ctrl+Alt+Del nothing will happen. Again, the only thing I can do is to press the power key a long time to power off.

    Few things you can try:
(Some of these aren't necessary fixes but troubleshooting procedures to try and pinpoint the problem.)

    1. Make sure Windows and Bios and drivers are updated. I know it's cliche but never know sometimes.

    2. Here's a hunch.. uninstall Kapersky then try booting up and shutting down. Startup/Shutdown issues are related to processes and/or apps not initializing or terminating gracefully. Sometimes that's due to malware but it can also happen with legit apps and AV apps are known for that.

    3. Do a Clean Boot: Disable the startup items and other non essential auto startup processes. Use the Selective Startup option in MSConfig. Under Services, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. restart and see if problems occur again. More info on doing clean boot: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

    4. iF after 1 & 2& 3 still give freezes time to dig up Event Viewer (Control Panel>Administrative Tools> Event Viewer>Windows logs ) and go through it see if there's anything there that could be causing the freezes.

I have a t61p and I have the same issue.

I installed a fresh copy of XP and downloaded Lenovo's ThinkVantage System Update 3.13 program (which automatically installed a bunch of windows updates and drivers) and the problem started.

As soon as the desktop loads (all icons and bg, ect.) everything freezes. all mouse things are dead. any key combo does nothing. pretty much a sad day.

I booted into safe mode: msconfig'd -> startup.
in the startup list there was blank process, which i found a tad odd. so i unchecked that and restarted into normal mode and no more freeze.

not sure what that update manager downloaded, or if my simultaneously installing updates from windows update and thinkvantage caused the issue.

That is why I recommend manually installing the drivers; System Update is unpredictable. I made a great guide that walks people through this process. You should perform another clean install by following the guide in my signature.

Currently I don't have freeze problem, I think it was caused by the intel turbo memory, the newest driver from intel still has problem. Disable it or uninstall it.
