T61p WSXGA+ 15.4" widescreen arrived... Initial thoughts - Beautiful machine, well made, solid, quiet and runs cool. Loved everything about it at first sight except for the screen which I thought was absolutely horrible. I mean so bad I was about to pack it up and return it the same day. It appeared dim, washed out, with terrible light leakage and my eyes felt very strained after an hour of use. Common complaints from what I've been reading on various forums.
I decided to give it another day, and while fiddling with all the features I ran accross the nVidia settings. A couple minor adjustments to brightness and contrast made a HUGE difference. I was absolutely shocked at the difference. I've never really fiddled with those settings on any system I've ever owned before, so I was really shocked to see what a difference they made on my T61p.
Enabling cleartype helped a great deal as well for readability. The default font (Win XP Pro) was hard on the eyes.
I'm guessing that these screens have unusually poor factory calibration and need tweaking before they look right. If your not happy with your display quality, give the nVidia settings a shot - it made a huge difference for me.
