Anyone using a blu-ray drive with their T61p? I have been waiting for Lenovo to come out with theirs but 6 months and still waiting. Any idea when this will come out?

If you are not using an internal, any externals that you recommend?

    Thanks

    Jim

    Jim,

The 14.1" and 15.4" widescreen R61's have blu-ray drives as an option when you customize... would have to guess that T61's will have them eventually.

In reading about the drive on the Lenovo site it only says it works with the R61. However, on other sites, it says both the r61 and t61 with dscrete graphics.

I am wondering if there is anyone out there using this?

Which sites say that the T61 has Blu-Ray support?

It seems that you can only use a T61/p with the blue ray drive in the dock and not in the ultrabay.

Its got something to do with 9.5mm blue ray drives not being available at the moment. Currently only 12.7mm drives are available and hence the compatibility with the R series and the docks.

Panasonic are about to unveil a slim 9.5mm blue ray drive at CES this month. http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/panasonic-whittles-thinnest-blu-ray-drive-for-laptops-down-to-9/

I guess that will mean that an ultrabay blue ray drive for the T61/p wont be too far off.

So are you saying that this drive will not fit in my t61p, it would have to go in my advanced dock? Why would they say it is compatible with the t61 if it cant use the ultrabay?

yes. it will not fit into the 9.5mm ultrabay of your T61p as its a 12.7mm drive

    yes

They said its compatible with the T61 when used in conjunction with the dock. They never stated specifically that its compatible with the ultrabay.

There was a post elsewhere stating that panasonic had sent samples to all of the major manufacturers a couple of weeks ago. Guessing it will be out in the next couple of months.

I guess Lenovo thought the Blu-Ray drive was more for multimedia then storage, thus putting it in the R series. They will now have to play catch up with other manufactures.

It has nothing to do with what they thought, it has to do with form factor. They didn't have a slimline BD drive that would fit in the T series ultrabay.

I saw that, but both the T61 and R61 use a 9.5MM drive.

According to what I just read, the Ultrabay in the R61 is 12.7mm.
