Hi. I am looking for recommendations for a laptop cooler for the T61p. Although the T61 may not have heat problems, the fx 570m gpu on the T61p generates a lot of heat when gaming and the section of the laptop directly under the gpu gets very hot to the touch (I haven't looked at the temperature but I can tell you it's very HOT) and the bottom of the laptop gets warm (probably due to the magnesium-alloy chasis inside).

    Do you've the 14.1' or the 15.4' version ?

Also, does your fan constantly run (even at low RPM blowing out cold/hardly warm air?). The idle noise on 14.1' T61p is much more than 15.4' version. I'm suspecting the smaller chassis on the 14.1' is the issue here. I do setup my power profile to be 'Adaptive'.

As far as heat goes, I've never seen my laptop get very hot that it becomes untouchable. Right palm gets very warm when I do extended Photoshop work. I've a 2.2 GHz processor on 14.1' chassis. TAT (Thermal Analysis Tool)reads 84C on max. performance, you might want to download that and check your readings.

    I have the 15.4'' version.

I don't really notice the fan running even when the system is under heavy load when I am gaming. I tried TAT but I think it only monitors the cpu temperature, but it's the gpu that's generating most of the heat. Do you know of software that could monitor the temperature of the gpu? My concern is that heating for extended periods would shorten the life of the system.
