I think you get my point, don’t be dense (I say that with a friendly intonation) – it’s not advertised as a “Lenovo ThinkPad with a Samsung Screen” is it? Lenovo makes the finished product so it’s their responsibility to accept or reject the components that go into it before it gets released.

By your logic, the OP should also have to know the exact time to order like bwhxeon suggests.

I've already stated in this thread that the topic creator should return his laptop. I've also said that Lenovo should not be putting these LCDs on their laptops.

However.. we do not know what led up to these crappy Samsung LCDs. Did Lenovo go out shopping for the cheapest LCD to compliment their flagship models, maybe. Did Lenovo make a deal with Samsung prior to these crappy screens coming out, maybe. Why can't they use all LG screens? Why can't Samsung make a decent LCD? Lenovo isn't paying them enough? Who knows?

Only one thing is for sure: the only way to teach Lenovo a lesson is with our wallets.

    True, I agree with you.

But are all Samsung screens bad? I really don’t know. In any case, it’s still Lenovo’s problem.

As for 'crappy Samsung LCDs' it could well be down to the type of panel it uses. We all know of Flexview screens which are S-IPS, the best tft panel type out there...but they hardly make them anymore at least not for mainstream notebooks. After that there's a host of different panel types...s-pva,mva,tn. Going into details of each panel type would be beyond the scope of this topic but suffice to say the most cost efficient (ie cheapest) would be TN type panels and that might be what Samsung uses here but I dont know for sure. That's not to say that all TN panels are crappy..TN panels have improved alot just this year alone as long as they're new. In fact I wont be surprised thats what LG uses too but there's a big difference in the new ones vs the old ones.

I have owned 3 desktop lcds ( 2 24" and one 22") which are equipped with Samsung panels and they were all very good but apparently their notebook screens aren't up to the same quality standards as their desktop counterparts. But of course I made sure they weren't TN panels...not sure if theres a way to tell what panel each manufacturer uses on notebooks.

What I like to see from Lenovo and other companies is add an extra customization level for their screens.
If any of you have shopped for a customized PC or notebook in the past its not uncommon to be given the option to pick the brand of ram you want on your machine. You will pay more for that privilege but at least you know you'll be getting a Corsair or Crucial for example.

Why cant they do the same for lcds:

    Display Panel
    1. 15.4" WSXGA+ generic tft (included in cost)
    2. 15.4" WSXGA+ Samsung tft (+100, may delay shipment of your machine)
    3. 15.4" WSXGA+ LG-Phillips tft (+150, may delay shipment of your machine)

'generic' can be either LG or Samsung depending on whatever they happen to have in stock at the time and you have no say on the type of panel you get but there won't be any delays as long as they are panels in stock. Prices are just for illustration purposes but I wouldn't mind paying a bit more if I know I'm getting the screen I want.

You just don't get it. Welcome to my ignore list! Population: you.

Thanks for defending me guys. Despite what this guy says I have been on NBR for two months agonizing over which laptop I should buy. It'd be nice to have one for school (the reason I bought the T61p), but I can survive without one for a while longer.

When I call I'm not even going to bring up the brand of the screen, I'll just say that the computer is unacceptable. If they ask why then I will fill them in on the screen, CPU whine, and the wobbly battery. I don't think I'm being unreasonable.

I have the Samsung screen on my 15.4" WUXGA t61p and it is just great. It does not look wonderful under windows, but under Ubuntu 7.10...wow!! The colors are so vivid. Just wonderful.

Screenshots don't prove anything. They look the same on any display.

And I'm talking about the WSXGA+. Whole different ballgame.

Well guys all is well that ends (relatively) well. Called up Lenovo today and they've given me a RMA #. I have to pay the restocking fee, but I can deal. I'm just pleased it'll be over with so soon given some of the horror stores on NBR.

This is the first time I've done a RMA. Anything important that I shouldn't forget?

Those horror stories are blown out of proportion...
If you don't like the notebook, call lenovo, request a return, get an RMA, pay the restocking fee and be done with it.
    End of story!

Could you tell us more about the screen reference ?

    Is it WUXGA ?
What is the monitor hardware id ?
(in windows you can find it
    in control panel>system>device manager>monitors
Then chose the your monitor, select details tab and hardware id)
