    Hi folks,

I just got my new T61p - everything works great so far under Windows XP pro with this one major annoying trouble - fan noise.

The fan seems to be running all the time no matter what I do. I can hear it clearly when I'm just doing some web browsing or even if the computer is idle.

I've customized the profile to set the CPU to 'adaptive' and this hasnt solved the issue. There is no CPU 'whine' issue here, just a constant fan noise which doesn't go away.

I've stressed tested using Intel Thermal Analysis tool and the idle temp. is around 51 C (with max. performance profile) and gets pushed to as high as 88 C under 100% load on both cores. This seems to be normal to me, unless someone tells me otherwise.

I just haven't figured out why the fan noise is constant. Please help me get rid of this noise :(

P.S: I've a T7500 @ 2.20 GHz...it seems whenever I change profiles, I manage to get rid of fan noise for just a little while and kicks right back in (no matter what profiles are selected)

    Thanks..........

Try to see if you have the problem when on battery. I noticed the same thing, but I decreased the processor power limits when on AC power, and it slowed down (not stopped) the fan significantly. I only need the full processor occaisionally in CAD

Also, if you are in a very quiet environment, check that the wall behind the computer isn't bouncing the sound back to you, and the desk isn't resonating and amplifying the noise. And also just be aware that human hearing is adaptive. You'll get used to a quiet environment and little noises will be more noticeable.

88C is in my opinion too high. It shouldn't be more than 72.

I did the thermal test on mine and it was between 68-71.

Get your heatsink/fan replaced. (I did)

Thanks lowspeed, can I ask what the temperature was before you got your heatsink/fan replaced ?

zhefei, thanks for your suggestion. I've found out if I set the profile to lowest, its hard for the fan noise to come back. I'm hoping that I can get some use out of the 'adaptive' feature and not have to resort to a lower settings.

88C means a thermal design failure.

I never let it go over 73 (at least when i had the temp gauge) .. It would pretty much go to 71C after 30 seconds of 100% cpu.

I'm surprised you can hear the fan. Even with a very quiet room i can't tell if it's running or not.

I actually wish they would let the fan go at a higher speed (it maxes at 3050RPM)

This is a shame - I cannot fully benefit the more sophisticated cooling design on my laptop. I'm having this one shipped back to and hopefully they'll fix whatever that is contributing to the problem. Will report back....

    Thanks everyone...

No, it actually should be more than 72C with Thermal Analysis Tool.
Try to run it. I'm sure you'll get much higher readings than 72C.

It sounds higher than "normal", but not by much.
    What were the ambient temps?
You should've run the TAT several times, like 30 min each session, over a few days.
My TAT temps were the highest on the first run, then got somewhat lower during the consecutive runs due to break-in.

I don't remember this on top of my head. As far as I can remember, 52C on maximum performance and cools down significantly (around high 30s) when selecting lowest profile.

I'll check once I get home. I'm supposed to get a box tomorrow....does anyone have experience on what the technician check and is the testing aggressive enough ?

    Thanks...

dump the laptop which has higher than normal temperature for the sake of reliability.

    Hey vostro.
Run the TAT on your laptop at full speed and let us know the temps, for the sake of common sense.

check with other vostro 1400 users then. my friend has vostro 1500 and he got 74/72 as his video card is 8400 which yields a bit more heat. mine is X3100.

You made it sound like your laptop runs 72C/70C with the TAT.
So you can't back up your statement then?

Ok, got my laptop after repair service, didn't do any good. TAT max. reading was 84C and most importantly, the fan never stopped running !!

Called up to have it sent back. Argued a lot to save the 15% restocking fee...thank god! The rep is trying to place another order with the same price thru the sales department.

This was a nightmare. Hope I won't get another lemon.

I think anything below 90C is OK with your processor. These CPUs are rated at 100C (diode temperature), even considering 5-10C thermal sensor error, 84C is still below the rated number. Of course for silicon, the cooler the better, but as I said, 84C is an OK temperature.

vostro: when u say 85C, that's storage temperature, which is misleading in this case. Also, if I remember correctly, you got the 72C reading on a laptop with a CPU that has half the L2 cache and 1.6Ghz freqency sitting inside a much larger (in size) laptop, so it's even more misleading.

84C is perfectly normal on TAT.
So, what was the problem, again?

    Are you running Vista?

AFAIK, running Vista, with the Aero rendered interface will force the GPU to run all the time, forcing the fan to cool the machine.

    Running Windows XP Pro.

The problem after the repair was that the fan would constantly run loud, even at idle and the fan just wouldn't stop spinning loud.....
