My GPU's been idling at 65 degrees Celsius and I know of the 86 chip failure issue so I decided to send it in to be replaced. The technician called back and said they only replaced the fan. Is that enough or should I insist for a whole motherboard replacement? My warranty is still till May 2011.

If the fan swap doesn't fixes the high temperature issues, you can escalate the issue and request a motherboard change. Given that your warranty runs out at May 2011, you still have some time to get this issue sorted (provided it is not rectified with a fan change).

Is 65C idling high for that chip in that compouter? That's the normal idle for the V5200 in a T60.

that is high for the T61p when idling, the T60p ATI GPU's high temperature was a well known problem.

Well, the fan/heatsink unit's been replaced and it now idles at a relatively balmy 53 degrees Celsius. A five minute session of Burnout Paradise with BIOS fan settings have it escalated to 75 degrees C. This certainly isn't too big of an improvement, to be honest.

well the 75 degrees isn't that hot if you play games on your laptop.

Dude, if your idle temps dropped 12C, that's a HUGE change.

    Yep, 75C @load is ok.
You can always try to improve the cooling further by modding the heatsinks, adding extra copper, etc. But there's no real for that kind of surgery in this case, IMHO.

Ok, then. I guess that's ok. But I can't help remembering the good old days when it idled around 48-49. I'll have a look at the paste again and see if I can tweak it a bit.

    Thanks everyone for your help

53 for a now 3 year old timebomb is pretty good dude...
It was (for me) a bit of a relief that my T61p got FUBAR'ed.... now i rock a W700 that even if the GPU fails i can thankfully get another MXM card.

I had my T61p dead system board replaced after my warranty expired, for free, "due to engineering change." I didn't monitor my temps before, but my 570m now idles at around 51C (room temp 74F, battery is charging if that matters) and if anyone is wondering the 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo goes as low as 36C.

FWIW, my 2.5 year old T61p's GPU idles at 57C pretty much since I got it. The 2.4GHz T8300 @ 37C (also no change).

I know there is some chance the GPU might fail due to the Nvidia screw up. Even though the warranty is long gone, I am going to pressure lenovo to replace it for free b/c they knew it was faulty (which is what they're doing now if you know what to say)

The majority won't fail but if it does within a year or 2 I'm going to stick it to Lenovo.

Otherwise I'm very happy with the laptop.

Well, I double they'll replace it if it's not failed. And they'll just replace it another defective Nvidia chip
