I just received a T61p with Vista Ultimate installed. Since the notebook was used by a coworker for a day, I decided to restore it to default using the included recovery CDs.

Upon restore, I discovered I now have XP SP2! Quite a nice surprise, since I originally asked for XP. (not really sure if the original recovery partition had Vista or XP)

Anyone else seen this happen before?

Vista Ultimate/Business entitles you to a license of XP Pro as well. I'm pretty certain your recovery partition has Vista Ultimate, as that's what was preinstalled on your laptop.

Nice to know. Although since I restored the recovery partition from the CDs, I guess there is no easy way to get Vista Ultimate back...if I actually want to do that someday.

Vista Ultimate should still be in the hidden recovery partition. Just press the blue ThinkVantage button when you boot up the laptop to go into recovery mode.

The CDs overwrote the recovery partition with an XP version. Guess I should have backed up the OEM licenses.

I'm sure you can ask Lenovo to send you a set of Vista Recovery Disks.
