I'm trying to decide between the T61 and the T61p. As far as I can see now, the differences between them are the panel resolution and the GPU, right?
My intention is to use my Thinkpad with a 22'' WSXGA+ LCD monitor connected through a doc station.
If I go with the T61p, it'll have a 1920×1200 resolution against the 1680×1050 supported by the monitor. Is this going to by a problem? Has anybody tried this before?
Also, I wonder if the Quadro FX 570M is going to handle better my 22 incher with respect to the Quadro NVS 140M in the T61.
I've heard from other ppl that the performance of big LCD monitors might be impacted by the performance of the GPU, for instance, scrolling down a web page might look smoother with a good GPU than with a poor GPU.
    Please advise.
    Thanks!

It does not matter what laptop you are going to get, both will support external monitor at that resolution. Internal LCD resolution does not matter whatsoever.

If you need 3D performance, then T61P is going to be better (the 15" model) at handling graphics at higher resolution in general but that does not have anything to do with internal screen res.

If you use your laptop screen a lot and get used to the High resolution you might be disappointed with the lower res screen. I ordered a T61p because I have been using that res for years and cannot work in anything smaller. You have to get used to that res on a 15 in screen but once you do it is great! Totally personal choice and my opinion.

There is a huge difference between a 15.4" WUXGA and a 22" WUXGA screen. Things look a LOT bigger on the 22" screen at native resolution.

Yup, I think I wouldn't feel pretty comfortable with the WUXGA in a 15.4
At this point, I'm kinda leaning towards the T61.
I wish the T61p would have been release with the WSXGA+ screen... and I know that is coming at some point, but I cannot wait any more. I've been waiting since May just to realize that is not what I was waiting for... :(
    Thanks everyone for the replies!

lol. i've been waiting since March, so I know at least some of your pain. I can't believe I've spent 5 months checking this and other websites 10 times a day.

now that i have my machine ordered, it's a wonder just how much free time has opened up for me to do other things.

the previous posters are correct, it doesn't matter what output screen you put through as long as you have a video out of some sort, the right cabling, and a videocard buff enough to handle that.

i can tell you that from my experience in multimedia presentations, from anything as simple as powerpoint, to displaying movies and live video behind instant text, the buffer your videocard, the better. If you're even talking ANYthing about video out, you'd better get the t61p. Your card may eventually have to simultaneously run something on your laptop lcd while at the same time outputting the same or a different screen onto another monitor or display.

Coming from a live media presentation perspective, those crunch moments in front of 150 people in a concert or conference setting are when you don't want your system to lag up, and your system to freeze, trying to figure out what you want to do with it, and which signals go where.

    my $0.02.

Good point Kebs. For a moment a I was almost convinced that the Quadro NVS 140M should be enough for my needs, since in the specifications they claim to support as much as two displays at 1600x1200 through DVI. oh! as I am writing this I'm realizing that 1680×1050 is not less or equal than 1600x1200! ****... will it support it?
I might open another thread asking for ppl who have used this configuration.
    Thanks!

the video card should support pretty much any resolution up to at least the resolution of the LCD panel, if not more.

You are also talking about my life before I got my T61 :)
