I ordered a well-equipped T61p with the current 15% discount. I intended on using it as a portable Linux development workstation with 4GB of RAM installed. After I placed the order, I read the apparent torrent of complaints about 4GB not working right. I tried to cancel, but it was shipped immediately even though the order status said not until 2/28.

Should I just go ahead and use it, or not even bother and return it?

the 4GB not working right was just a mobo issue with the earlier t61p's. ever since i got my mobo replaced, i've had no problems with it.

Dang, how long did it take for your laptop to be shipped? I ordered last Friday and still waiting. I was told it will be shipped this week. I'm hoping today or tomorrow so I'll have it before the weekend!

I ordered on Thursday afternoon 2/7 and it was apparently shipped yesterday. Maybe my cancellation attempt moved me to the front of the line?

LOL, they wanted it to get it out the door before you changed your mind, maybe? Seriously, that's fast shipping on their part, though.

T9300,WSXGA+,100GB 7200rpm drive,1GB RAM,Atheros A/B/G WiFi,6-cell battery,Vista Home Basic (which I'm going to wipe without even booting, as I have an XP virtual machine I'd rather use).

Restating the obvious, you are strongly advised to use a 64 bit distribution. Should that not be possible or desired, see http://kerneltrap.org/node/2450 for a discussion on how to take good advantage of your 4GBs with a 32 bit kernel.

You might want to install a 32 bit browser at the very least, to have a workable Adobe Flash player, or use nspluginwrapper

    Best regards,
    Roberto.

Just arrived after a hang up in Customs. Man that was fast! They really need to update the sales web site to reflect real order, production and shipping intervals.

I upgraded to 4GB 1st thing and it will be sitting in Memtest+ for a while before I actually install software and use it.

One minor thing: It doesn't seem quite as solid as my older T40 (which I still use daily as my XP machine).
