    I've got a T61p with the Quadro 570M running Ubuntu 8.04.

I just noticed something odd, when I fire up glxgears, I hear a slight screeching sound coming from my laptop.

Do you have any idea what that could be or what I should do next?

EDIT: I just checked, the GPU does rise in temperature, but only a few degrees, from ~54C to ~57C
EDIT2: I let it run a while longer and the GPU temp got up to 70C

I think it could be your fan or hard drive. I doubt it has anything to do with your GPU, unless it's the fan for it. Some Samsung Hard Drives make screeching noises when it accesses data. That is usually normal. Are you sure your sound is turned off? Maybe your sound card has a problem?

yes, the volume is muted. I think the most likely thing is, as you said, a fan or hard drive. However, I only get the sound at it's loudest when I'm running glxgears, even running Quake4 doesn't get it that loud.

glxgears shouldn't have any hard disk I/O, so I'm guessing it's the GPU fan

It could be CPU whine, which is a very common problem these days.
