Not until next year at least. If you need a laptop now, then get it. Otherwise, you'll always be waiting if you want the latest and greatest.

    Not anytime soon?
I would expect a new redesign in about 6 months.
It's not like they have a choice, with the new tech popping up with clocklike regularity.
LED backlighted screens (shipping in Dells and Macs already), SSD, Penryn+Montevina - just to name a few.

Penryn alone might not even be enough to upgrade to T62 since it's still the same Socket P. (Similar to Yonah --> Merom for T60)

I think we'd either see T70 or T62 for Nehalem

Santa Rosa was enough of an upgrade to change the designation to T61.
Montevina is an even bigger upgrade from the previous chipset.

I'll definately be getting a thinkpad sometime next year so i am quite intrested to see what will be released.

As unhooked said, with montevina and penryn coming out next year, we should expect a re-design, but shame the IBM label will be gone.

I'm also going to buy myself a new laptop next year. Supposedly late June. Hopefully Lenovo released the Thinkpad X70 at that time. Or at least announced it. If it's announced I'm ready to wait a couple of month.

Since this thread has been recently revived:
I remember Notebookreview teasing us a few months ago with a Thinkpad video in which one could briefly see a widescreen X-series laptop. I just saw the teaser, not the full video (you had to register to some website to do so), and didn't hear from it since then.
So: is this"X62"/"X70" thing for real? Any idea when it might be released? I'm wondering if the form factor alone would warrant a new release (ie, Q1 2008), or if they'd be waiting for the next Intel CPU/platform (ie, probably not before mid-2008).

OK, I've seen this video again, and it appears my wishful thinking tricked me into seeing what wasn't there. I thought the Thinkpad shown was an X-series because I only saw a trackpoint when looking at the keyboard (hence: "shorter than a T, must be a X"). But after watching more carefully, there is indeed a touchpad too. So this was actualy a T-series. Albeit one held by a guy with very large hands.
    Bummer :-/

At first glance I would disagree because to me sitting in a law class for 3 hours trying to stare down at a 12" widescreen AND "pretend" to maintain eye contact with the professor would be hard. However, it should open up room to have a ful size backspace key and such...so it would be tempting.

I think Lenovo just might introduce that. I think it would be a sound addition to the ThinkPad lineup. Although I am much more of an ultraportable kind of guy, I think a 17" workstation ThinkPad would sell well.

Well in the sticky during the lenovo presenation, that was asked as a question and Lenovo said they would consider it if there is a high demand

Just to go out on a limb, I'll predict:

Penryn in early 08--no change in model number

Montevina platform with appropriate Penryns mid 2008--T62

Calpella platform with Nehalem early to mid 2009--T70

I'd definitely get one as a desktop replacement. Currently my favorite 17" notebook is the HP 8710w. But if Lenovo introduces a 17" ThinkPad in the usual style, it would probably be my new preferred choice.

    I'd like a 17" thinkpad too. With a WUXGA screen :)

Actually, I'd also like an X70 with a SXGA+ screen.

I think I would add on 4 months to each of those predictions. Penryn is officially coming out early 2008 for desktops. it usually takes a few months for them to transition it into notebooks
