I ordered the T7500 in my X61, but I'm starting to fear that this will overheat something fierce. Is this too much power for such a small chassis?

No, it shouldn't. They wouldn't sell it if it did, if it does, they'll take care of it for you.

Your Laptop will get hot though, dont get me wrong.

I guess you're right, though, sometimes I reconsider this decision, but, if I changed it, I wouldn't get my notebook until October.

The processor itself does not get so warm, and since the X61 had better and more effective cooling system than X60-series, I think it would not be any problem at all.

Actually, the 7k2 RPM disks emit more heat that is not chilled by any cooler or heat sinker. After a few months of usage, you will feel that the disk gets warmer and warmer (but of course, it will not boil or so! :) )

We use X60 machines with 7K2 disks and T7200 processors (model UX0QDSW) and they have never had any problems of any kind.

The WiFi card located under right palm rest can get a little toasty as well.

    Did you get the atheros?

Atheros + T7500 + 7200rpm drive would make me worry about heat too. Though I've never used that combination. But my X60 is a bit too warm for my comfort, mainly because of the atheros (right palm rest)... when I turn wifi off, heat is no issue.

The X61 we have at work has not corrected the hot right palm rest. Meaning, the wifi card is still heating that up.

No, I got the Intel 4965 AGN. Hopefully, this will cut down on the heat it's cranking out.

    Well let us know.

Why get the T7500 anyway? The T7300 or even T5500 or even a dualcore T2400 will be more power than you'll need or use. Especially on an X, are you running something so CPU-intensive? The T7500 is a lot of extra money for a marginal amount of extra processing capability that I doubt almost anyone would use.

    ^^

I don't know, I thought I'd need it... anyway, the order's placed now. I'd change it if I could, but then I wouldn't get the notebook until October.

Yeah, I think if the CPU is offered, the heat it outputs should be within the tolerances set during testing.

Just an aside, but the T7700 was removed as an option on the yet-to-be-shipped Dell XPS 1330 ultraportable, for "compatibility" reasons. Rumor/common sense on the Dell forum is that it's too hot.

So yes, there do seem to be differences in heat as you increase in frequency even on the same voltage (makes sense), but there's no reason to immediately suspect it would be unacceptable...
