I know that some late T61p's were able to use the smaller (45nm) T9300 or T9500 C2D and stay considerably cooler because they are smaller, as i plan to game on the T61p and benchmark GTA 4, i really need to keep it cool because of the G84 core defect. I see one on eBay for about 200 bucks, can anyone with a T61p using the T9300 in it tell me if it stays cooler than the earlier T700 (65nm)?

No.. i just wanted T61p owners that have the very recent T9300 to testify as to how temps seems compared to the T7700 which is what will be in the one i ordered off eBay.

T7xxx is the worst C2D ever, high TDP.... But the problem of the T61p is more to do with the GPU then the CPU.

Yes but since they both share the same heatsink, the cooling space that a T9300 would possibly free up could be used to better cool the GPU, by space i don't mean it in a literal sense, i just mean TDP in Watts.

It should, but would really bother with it? Given that it does void the warranty on the laptop. What i will do is to extend the warranty period for as long as possible.

I'm admiring that T43 you have up dere

I would be worried in removing the thermal pad on the GPU heatsink and put a copper place with some Arctic MX-2. That nasty GPU needs to be cooled down properly to avoid the known problem of shrinking when heating up, and if you plan on playing GTA IV I'd say the computer would get damn hot.
Certainly a T9300 would help to bring those temps down but be aware that not all boards on T61 do accept newer Penryns, not sure why but it has been discussed at thinkpads.com forums that not every T61 would accept a T8100/T8300/T9300/T9500.
I'd suggest first seeing your temps while playing and also undervolt your CPU.
T9300 upgrade to keep T61p cooler.
