    There is a thread over at thinkpads.com that talks about a program called tpfancontrol which is supposed to control the fan on thinkpads in order to reduce fan noise. The version I downloaded was on page 17 of the thread and it is for T60 models. Here is a link to that page: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=17715&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=480

    I downloaded this program for my T60 but am not quite sure how to use it. Once I installed the program my fan instantly quieted down, but there was no type of control panel or monitoring software for me to control the fan or even see the temp of my machine etc.. I might have been doing something wrong but I'm not sure. I just uninstalled the program because I didn't want to harm my computer and the fan just went back to its normal noise level. Is there anyone here who has used this program and could help me out with it? I would greatly appreciate it!

    I don't use the version you linked to; it is a modified version of the one here http://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol/ , which I use. This one has a temperature monitoring interface, as well as the option to switch between BIOS fan control (default), smart mode (this is what you want), and manual.

    It takes some experimentation to set the best levels for your laptop. Mine fancontrol.ini is:

    Active=1

    Cycle=5

    MinimizeToSysTray=1

    MinimizeOnClose=1

    StartMinimized=0

    IconLevels=59 64 69

    FanBeep=0 0

    MaxReadErrors=5

    IgnoreSensors=GPU

    Level=50 0
    Level=59 1
    Level=64 3
    Level=69 7

    Thanks so much for the link and info. What are the specs on your T60?
