I've been scratching my head over this one. I have 2 new thinkpads, a 15.4 R61e and a 15.4 T61. Both have T8100 cpu, 2Gig ram and run Vista. The T61 has been running noticeably hotter on the bottom. I used PC Wizard 2008 to take a closer look. The R61 cpu is ~33C and 39C ACPI thermal zone, the T61 is ~53C and 50C. This is under low cpu usage, ie. idle browsing and word processing, nothing much at all. Both are using the Energy star power profile. Why a 20C differance? I would love my T61 to be as cool as the R61. Any ideas?

Well the T61 runs with a discrete graphics card. So it's definitely going to be hotter.

The R61 and T61 both use Intel's integrated X3100 graphics. The T61p has discrete graphics.

Ooo.. You learn something new everyday.

Then, maybe it has something to do with the R series being slightly thicker? So there's more air flow?

Actually, the R61 and T61 have the option for discrete graphics. Both have the option for NVS 140M chips.

The T61p is the only Lenovo notebook with the option for an FX570M, which is pretty much an 8600M GT.

have a look a the 'thinkpad fancontrol' program, its a great little app. I just started using it on my X31 and it works great and is very customizable.

Can you post the links to the review(s) saying the T61 is cooler? I looked up the reviews here, but there's no direct comparison and both reviews say the notebook is cool. I assume the T61 is cooler with the same internals (cpu, graphics, hard drive), but I haven't seen anything to confirm that.
