You do have a point, I'm 24 and I can't remember the last time I bought a DVD lol
Most of my friends and I usually rent/buy a movie on NetFlix, or watch something on HBO (on Demand), rent it from Blockbuster, download a movie from the ITunes store, etc.

That's a strange plus the iPad has against any netbook. Streaming netflix or iTunes movies is flawless. The netflix application alone makes me very, very happy.

It may not be perfect, but someone should buy everyone at MSFT's tablet division an iPad. This is touch/tablet computing done right. I miss inking, but seriously, I look at my iPad and I feel like Windows Tablet OS is Windows Mobile. How does a company have a 6 year headstart and get taken to the woodshed by a first generation product? If they had marketed OneNote as the beautiful product that it is, there would have been higher adoption. If they stuck with the HP TC1100 design, the iPad wouldn't feel so "innovative". That tablet pc was amazing. That was five years ago.

I miss inking big time, but stylus based computing is dying. First with mobile phones and now with tablets :( I thought there was something strange when so many of the upcoming slates weren't using WACOM, but this is the nail in the coffin that will make inking a niche product.

God. It's been two days and I'm already thinking tablet PCs, netbooks, and e-readers are dead. Someone get me off of Steve's jock!

For god's sake, it's an oversized iPod Touch!

I could see it going either way. It looks like it's very good for consuming media/games and limited PC stuff, but it doesn't offer the utility of a notebook or even a netbook. Time will tell if people like it enough to live with its limitation.

It's not innovative... period. It's an expanded iPod Touch that still can't multitask and has updated components.

I was thinking about getting one myself just to see what all the hype was about, but I think I will just ride it out, and see what becomes of it.

Is anyone gonna comment on why they need multi tasking so bad, or why they want a full operating system.

In terms of multitasking, people would usually prefer this feature given the size of the iPad and comparison are made to Netbooks, which is capable of multitasking.

Multitasking should be coming in the 4.0 version of the OS. However, since the iPad was just jailbroken, there will be a lot of fun things soon including multitasking.
Yeah, multitasking would be nice. I use the Slacker music service and it would be great to have that running in the background while I surf.

what is the point of having the unlimited 3G download with the US model of the iPad, if you can't run multiple apps in the background.

Imagine watching Hulu live with the iPad.

hulu app going to be out soon. But the more I look at the ipad, the more I want a slightly larger ipod. i.e. 4.3inches. I would also hope that the battery is the same as the ipad.

I bought an iPad for my niece.
She is 12 and had to have one. ( I know, I know, shes spoiled)
And no way were her parents going to buy it for her.
    ( she already has a Touch .)
Of course I set it up for her.

BOY OH BOY.... WHAT A JOKE.

No Camera ( which my 2 year old phone has)
No Alarm Clock ( which any phone has, for the past ten years)
NO Clock Function ( which any phone has , for the past ten years)
    No Flash
    No USB ports
    No SD Slot.
    Non removable Battery.
    Non up-gradeible Memory.
No Weather Function. ( which any phone has)
No GPS (which my two year old phone has)
And to top it off a P.C.'s USB wont charge it ( even my x201's powered USB port can charge it.) Just get a message on the iPad saying "Not Charging"

From what I read on-line it can only be charged by a Mac. ( cute way for JOBS to sell more Macs) or the wall outlet.

AGAIN, WHAT A JOKE. Most cheapo phones can do more than this iPad.

For Apple to claim its Magical, and Revolutionary is a Sham.
    NetBook replacement? Outright lie.

It's a real shame. If Apple wanted it really could have been something.

even a iPad knockoffs has more function and features than a real iPad has, which is a shame.

There is simply no Comparision to a Computer.
The point I was trying to make was it does not even compare feature wise to
simple phones, let alone a smart phone.

Yet its hyped as a computer replacement

    I have to disagree.

I think it is reverent not only to Lenovo but all consumer computer followers/users

You have a major Company ( Apple) marketing a product ( iPad ) as Magical and Revolutionary in the Mobile computing world.

In their words " a Computer replacement."

How is this products discussion useless or pointless?

What we are witnessing is history in the making.

The dumbing down of the computer for a new generation of people.

The iPad will never replace a computer anytime soon. They are in the market of the ebook and MID, nothing less nothing more.

Obvious troll thread is obvious. The iPad is obviously the best because it's an Apple product. Honestly, you put an iPad next to say...a Microsoft Courier (I know it's not out yet, but just an example) - what looks better? What is cooler? What are people going to want? They want something that is cool (well, in the market it's targeted at anyway). Obviously, the person with the Apple product is cooler than the person with the Microsoft product because Apple is just cooler than Microsoft.

Same goes for owning an MBP vs a normal PC - young people will always see the person with the MBP as being cooler, more popular, having more of a life, etc.

That's just the way the world is these days.

This might sound insane...but the iPad is the first Apple product I am seriously considering acquiring.

I have never been a fan of Apple's products, however I do see their appeal (my wife uses them exclusively). I have found MacOS to be annoying to use, iPhone was offered over At&T only (epic fail), iPod would make me slave to iTunes with my music. I always did, however like the design of their products, however the drawbacks (in my eyes) did not ever made me consider buying one of their devices.

I also was never a fan of netbooks. I always looked at it as an el cheapo device that tries to be like a proper laptop and fails. Okay to take on the plane with you to get some work done, but the little screen is terrible for actual productivity. For just relaxing and watching streamed netflix or checking the news in the morning it is not perfect either...Screen is small and crappy and the thing is just clunky overall. A proper laptop beats it hand down for both of these tasks. I had a netbook for a month, and promptly sold it, as it was not getting much use.

I havent yet played with an iPad, but it seems like a very nice "compromise" device to do things i usually do in off-hours. When I wake up in the morning i like to read news and check a couple of web sites before even getting out of bed. A laptop is too much of a pain to get out, turn on and then waste battery life that i will need at work during the day (and I really dont want to even move in the morning). Right now i use my Android phone for these tasks, but the relatively small touchscreen is a constant source of annoyances and isnt the best thing to read stuff on. In this case iPad would be a perfect thing to keep next to my bed just for that.

Then at night before i fall asleep I usually get in bed, watch streamed netflix or hulu or read some journal articles or a book I downloaded in pdf format. Currently my W510 is a bit too clunky for it, plus i need to get out of bed and go plug it in before going to sleep.

Then there is the scenario when nature calls. Currently my smartphone acts as my main device to browse the webs or read something while in the can. Again, iPad would work a whole lot better here.

The crazy thing is that for all of these random things i do in my down-time, I almost never use a keyboard, dont need multitasking, and dont need a capability to create things. I think Apple might be onto something here. Now only if the thing had a nice file management system i'd go buy one right now.

My current stable of devices includes a relatively powerful desktop with two big monitors that I use for getting work done at home or playing a game once in a while. My second device is a Thinkpad W510 which i carry every day to work and use there (remarkably nice desktop replacement, made my office desktop obsolete). I have to say that I never got along with smaller format laptops. The screens were always either too low resolution or they were not powerful enough. In my 6 months using a T400s i found myself often hamstrung due to a lack of dedicated GPU and a lack of space on that 128gb SSD (not to mention it was very portable, but still too clunky to take to the can or keep at bedside). iPad would kind of fit nicely in between the smartphone I always have while on the go and the workstation laptop I absolutely require to get real stuff done while remaining portable.

I have a feeling the ipad might be the first apple device i ever spend my money on....just to have a portable semi-computer at home.

iPad has potential, but the current software and its hardware are the limiting factors....

with the current CPU it has, it is limited as to what it can do in terms decoding HD movies on the fly...

Personally, I think ThinkPads look cool and if I could justify it, I would buy a X201 immediately. As of now my R400 does well...Oh and did I say, I think the ThinkPad looks cool?

The limitations as listed by Oldghost kill the iPad for me. I believe there is a Chinese ripoff (has a name like P88 or something like that) which, while being slightly heavier, has most of the functions that the iPad does not have.

EDIT: I have only see and read about the P88 on sites like these. The only place where the P88 fails is the battery time.

All, can we just agree to disagree? I think it's a phenomenal complement to my X201s. Others may want something different. Just leave it at that. 300,000 have been sold. Regardless of how you feel about it, the iPad has been a retail and critical success.

Things might be different when the U1 comes out. That's what I'm really looking forward too... and then the iPad goes up on eBay.

    It's too early to make a U1 Owner's Thread.

I was out running errands last night and stopped at Best Buy to see one for myself. If they had had one in stock, it probably would have followed me home. A very polished product, just as I had assumed it was.
