The connected AC adapter has a lower wattage than the recommended model which was shipped with the system.

Thanks for the extra info. That PSU should be more than adequate, even for the W520. Lenovo don't list any bigger PSU.

I wonder if the BIOS is not reading the PSU type correctly. Assuming that lenovo use the same method as Dell then the centre pin in the power jack (plug) connects to a chip in the PSU which gives the power rating. Have a look in the end of the power jack and check that the pin in the middle is there and hasn't broken off.

Do you have the battery installed in your W520? Is the 170W adapter plugged directly into the wall, into a power strip, etc?

    Checked the pin. It's fine.

I tried to run the w520 without the battery as a last resort when the brick wouldn't charge no matter what I did. (Check the link in my first post)

It works if I take the battery out and run it with only the charger plugged in.

The charger also charges the battery if the system is turned off. In 2 hours it charged about 80-90%.

I get the errors randomly, and sometimes nothing helps. That's why I'm puzzled. Somebody on another forum said that it is a: "Hardware issue. Send in for repair. The power circuits are damaged."

But I'm not sure this is true...
