GASP! link doesn't work
-
-
Sigh. I can't believe I went through all that trouble trying to read Chinese...
The picture is quite the lulz though.

Should've read this ( 对不起,请不要从外部链接下载本论坛的附件。instead of close the tab in a split-second.
-
Basically, no direct linking to downloads on their forum.
Any comments though? It seems like that latch isn't fitting properly? -
-
Im trying to figure out whether it was a) there was a gap before and he is pressing down or b) he was pull up. Now a) is a valid concern however b) is just picky.
-
never realized until now how "box" like thinkpads are.
lenovos are the volvos equalivalent of computers -
-
Despite the snide remarks from the others, this is not normal.
My t60 lid figs snugly, does not have the arch in the middle, it does have a bit of play, but there is as much of a gap as posted. -
I remember a dell latitude is better made

yeah? I used to have a latitude d420. no flex at all, really solid.
now, the x60s I have is very very annoying... loose lid, flex near the power button... anyway, it's not as well made as the d420.
I don't really care about the mag. alloy frame inside, I mean how many of us will benefit from that? I like dell's idea, put mag alloy outside... -
-
I'd have to agree he is lifting the lid in the first frame and pushing it down in the other.
As more proof take a look at his thumb's nail to see how he applies pressure.
To the OP: The lid stays closed due to latches - this type of 'gap' is perfectly normal. I would not advise trying to lift your lid while the latches are locked in though. -
-
Mine's not quite that gapped, but the left side (without the latch) still has a bit of gap and feels kind of loose. Is this normal? Just want to make sure.
-
-
A clear case of a misaligned lid.
-
Would make a nice avatar though.

The lid on my T61 was exactly like that of the OP - the left latch did not fit snugly in the lid, and as a consequence it would show about 1/16 to 1/8" of play once the lid was closed. See the animated GIF toward the start of the thread - it is an accurate representation of problem and is definitely not faked.
My wife's Dell 700m has a lid that fits snugly and so does my HP nc6400, so I know a loose lid isn't normal. Furthermore, on the T61 there are short protrusions in the middle of both sides of the lid with corresponding indentations in the case above the USB ports and DVD drive. The lugs are supposed to fit in those holes to keep the lid from shifting side to side when it is shut. The latches are only supposed to hold it shut.
With the loose left latch, the lid is never fully closed on the left side. The left lug doesn't even reach the case even though the latch is engaged.
To solve this, I glued two small pieces of black plastic on both sides of the latch mechanism. In effect this prevents the latch from coming so far out of the lid and the end result is a perfectly snug lid!
Of course I could have sent my brand new T61 back for warranty repair, but I'm not convinced it would have returned in better shape. There are many Thinkpad fanboys here who live in denial and say this isn't a problem, but I think it's a design flaw. -
My T61 also has the exact same problem as stated by ari_m.
right latch/right side of the computer fits snugly as expected. left latch does not secure left side of computer, hence gap between left palm rest and left bezel.
Poor quality control. -
The left side of my T61 is tight, the right side has a lil movement.
-
I hope my t61p isn't like that, if it comes. But my t42 is nothing like that.. It's snug and tight, no play what-so-ever.
-
I received my T61 a few weeks ago, and it also has the same problem. The left side of the lid doesn't close completely shut and there is a tiny gap between the lid and the notebook on the left side. The right side is snug and tight.
I thought about sending mine in for warranty work, but I decided against it, since school is starting soon and I will need my notebook in the coming weeks. Apart from that, the notebook is in perfect condition and the little flaw doesn't really bother me. I have a three year warranty, so if I'm forced to send it in for warranty work later on, I'll let them know about the lid issue as well... I just don't think that this issue is worth warranty work on its own. -
fwiw, my 14" t61p is snug and firm. No build issues noted so far.

Theres been all this complaining about having a few mm of play on the lid....may I ask why thats such a big deal?
Personally I couldn't care less if the lid fit 100% perfectly or not, just so long as it stays closed and the computer is fast. -
the reason why you see the complaining is because the new thinkpads aren't as well built as the old ones
one would think with the developing technology, lenovo could have at least made them shut right -
90% of everything that is made now used to be made better. Its just how things have gone.
ThinkPad's are now mass produced by a Chinese company in China, we're lucky they close at all. -
I cannot imagine how expensive it would be if the thinkpads are 100% made in usa
-
if thinkpads were made in the u.s.a, it would cost you as much as a Hummer H3! ha ha...
-
i don't believe thinkpads were ever made in the usa..even under IBM

ATTENTION IMPORTANT PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT:
It puts the lotion on the skin or it gets the hose again.
ATTENTION IMPORTANT PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT:
(I wouldn't be overly concerned with such a small flaw unless it prevents your notebook from closing or risks damaging your notebook while carrying it around) -

holy jeez nice three month bump eyecon!!!

whoops

Sadly, I have the exact same problem with my new R61... it is a minor quality control issue, but enough to really bother me, given that I bought a Thinkpad specifically with the expectation that these types of problems would not happen. Unfortunately, sending it back to my vendor is not an option. Interestingly, the instructions for disassembling a LCD screen doesn't seem that complicated. So perhaps I will take a chance with disassembling and heat bending the case slightly, to get rid of the warp.
-
looks like most t61's have this problem...it really bothered me at first since my old t40 was solid..absolutely no play at all...but after a few mo of ownership, it stops bothering you and you learn to accept it...
