How complicated can this be? I must be missing something. I know there are options for enabling power off for the optical drive in Power Manager -- but isn't there just a simple way to turn the device on or off? Without going through Power Manager? I see that green light running and I figure I can save a few minutes of my abysmal (90 minutes) of battery power by turning that darn thing off.

You can disable it from tray, just like any other USB connected device.
At least I can do this with R400.

The automatic setting disables it after a minute of disuse. Alternatively, you can simply click the Safely Eject Hardware icon in the System Tray and eject the UltraBay drive just as you would a USB drive. The light should then turn off, indicating that the UltraBay is powered off.

The light is an LED, and uses a pretty insignificant amount of power. Disabling the ODD won't help boost your battery life, really.
