I'm really excited about ordering my new ThinkPad today! Even after 6 years my old ThinkPad T60 is still running great!
Thanks to all here in helping technology-challenged me. Reading these boards for few days actually has me excited about doing some upgrades myself! You guys have me itching to get my hands dirty!
Last few questions?
I've seen the side by side pictures of the old v. new screens. I'm ok with it and would move the tool bar vertically, as someone here suggested.![]()
Now does the T520 have the same issue? Same new ratio? Is the T520 screen better than the T420 in anyway? I mean quality and not size, of course.
Going with the lowest RAM so I can learn to urgrade myself. As for the hard drive, I was told by someone to get the Hard drive from Lenevo because that's what Windows will be installed on. But couldn't I get the smallest Hard drive I can get away with now and then install a larger one later? Would that be too difficult for such a COMPLETE beginner like me? LOL I mentioned adding another HD later but then I would sacrifice the DVD thing?
Is there THAT much of a price difference between me doing some of these upgrades and not having it done by Lenevo? Not about the money as much anymore as much as I want to learn to start doing a few things myself. So excited! Thanks!

T520 has the same 16:9 ratio, you can get it with a higher resolution that the T420. As far as higher quality I'm not sure.
Yes the only copy of windows you get is on the HDD but it's very easy create recovery discs from the thinkvantage tools. I ordered mine with the cheapest HDD and plan on upgrading to an SSD using these steps.
As for the price difference of self upgrades, I think Lenovo wanted another $75 to bump the ram up to 4gb. I ordered my with two then bought a 4gb DIMM for 39.99. So there is a $35 dollar savings and I get 6gb instead of 4. They charge $350 for a 128gb SSD and I bought a used 64gb for $100 so I saved a lot there. I think its $70 to move up to a 500gb 7200rpm drive which you can buy elsewhere for $50 or so.
Think today is the day! But few last questions?
