I recently reinstalled Win XP on my T40 after an extended stint with Vista. Things were puttering along and I got to the place where it was about to run the factory pre-install routine to add the ThinkPad apps and drivers. Since the restore disks were quite old, I decided to hit cancel and instead install SP3 assuming I could just run System Update later.

Bad choice... System Update didn't find and / or install a number of key drivers and even some software available on the factory disk (e.g. WinDVD). I have been able to manually install some things, but there is still stuff missing.

Is it too late to go back and run the script / utility? If so, how would i go about doing that? I hunted around and wasn't really able to find an obvious location of the program. I am not concerned about "bloatware" as this set of factory contents didn't have much... just older versions of the drivers & programs that I knew i was going to have to update anyway.

I know I could just start the restore process all over again, but I had to call Microsoft to get an special activation key with the recent install (the HDD is not original) and I would rather avoid having to do that again.

    Thanks for your help.

    An update on the case...

I was able to locate the program that brought up the window I originally saw. It's a little program called sysprep and it was located in a few folders. I ran a few things on it. The last one said about "sealing" the OS for the end user. It finished-up a few things on windows (desktop shortcuts and a user account set-up) but still didn't install the stuff I wanted.

I am now starting to wonder if the different HDD caused the restore process to go more awry than I thought. One reason is because the restore utility never even asked for disks 3 & 4 (out of 4). I would like to get this figured out so I can get on with reinstalling everything else on the system. I am also still skittish about undoing my activation of Windows (the thing I mentioned about look like it had reset it, but it went back okay). I know there is supposed to be more because I have done a factory reinstall a few times before (this is the first with the new HDD).

Anyway, if anyone can offer suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
