I wonder if anyone actually accidentally spill water on their thinkpad. i saw an video on youtube. Someone actually tried that.

    my question is
what would happen to the T61 widescreen if you spill water on the keyboard?
i mean even though the keyboard is spill proof, the speaker right next to the keyboard is NOT(PLEASE correct me if im wrong).

I haven't personally checked it out but many miniature speaker cones are made of mylar or a similar material rather than paper. If that's the case, it's likely fairly immune to liquid spills.

In theory, water wouldn't penetrate past the keyboard layer, and it should drain out of the spill holes. This of course depends on the amount of liquid and where you spill it though.

If you search the forums here, you'll find people who have spilled water over their Thinkpads and had problems.

Also, keep in mind only the keyboard itself is spill-proof :p Any sizeable liquid spills would have a number of ways to mess up your computer...

when i removed the keyboard on a R61 and T61, I was thinking "this is spillproof???!" Im guessing its for small amounts of liquid as any larger amount (cup of coffee) would overflow the edges and get right into the motherboard.

My friend spilled a whole cup of water on his T42. His laptop is still working without any problem.

I thought the same when i removed the keyboard. I wonder if the touchpad area is "spill proof" as well

the touchpad is def not. I took one apart to fix some flexing noise issues and there is nothing that seals it to the palm rest

Well, I don't think anyone intended it to be as a barrier against people pouring water all over the thinkpad - it's just as a just-in-case thing - better than nothing!

now as I think about the 'features' of thinkpad, I realize that they are just BS.

mag. alloy lid?? my trackpoint and mouse buttons leave marks on the LCD when it's closed.

spill proof keyboard?? just a big pile of BS.

If you want a spill proof keyborad, get the Panasonic Toughbooks. I've used them while serving in the army before. It was thrown out of a moving truck onto the road... I've personally used it in the middle of a thunderstorm and it was working great.

I think Thinkpads are built tough enough for everyday office work and commuting day to day. Don't expect much if you plan to waste your Big Gulp into your keyboard.

    Cheers,
    Nick
