    * WARNING: Below details my efforts over the past 72-hours of trying to fix my problem - so it is very long :( *

Please I am begging for Help!

In an attempt to install the problematic update MS KB979906 for .NET Framework 1.1 SP1, I accidentally Removed Windows XP component which connects to:

    - NetWork Connections Wizard,

    - NetWork Connections Icons

    - My SysTray is missing Icons e.g. computer monitor-like icon that you can Right-click on to see "Available Networks" "Repair Network Connections" “Change/Add NetWork Connections” and flashes bright blue when you are connected to the internet; it also tells how many bars you have for your connection

    - Unable to launch Anti-Virus program AVAST

Since I had this accident every time I boot up I receive the following error messages:

    - Rescue & Recovery Back-up Service unable to run

    - Netwk.exe error

I’ve tried installing these in hopes of fixing the problem – but to no avail:

    - Tried to download the following but got error message - NDP1.1sp1-KB979906-X86 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    - Then I tried downloading Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and received the following error message - "this product is not supported on X86 operating system"

    - Then I tried installing .NET Framework 4 Setup got error message "Installation Did Not Succeed because Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed"

    - Then I tried to install Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable, and received the following: EXTRACTION FAILED - .update.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Then I performed: chkdsk/f and rebooted. When I go into the ThinkVantage Productivity Center Data Protection and Recovery, I receive the following error messages:
    - WIZRR MFC Application encountered a problem. Please tell Microsoft - Send Report or Cancel
    - GUI MFC encounted a problem Please tell Microsoft - Send Report or Cancel

Then, when I go into ThinkVantage Technologies and tried to do Rescue and Recovery - the error message states "Windows Installer could not access. Windows installer is not properly installed."

So I then went to Microsoft's web site and tried to: - Solve a problem with Rescue and Recovery. "Rescue and Recovery has stopped working properly. To solve this problem, go to the Lenovo website to download and install the update:

So I went over to Lenovo's website this is the message I received: "Our apologies - There is a problem retrieving the document MIGR-72356".

Below are some Event Viewer Application Log Messages.

PLEASE please please can someone help me either fix or point to where I can reinstall the missing components. Also I'm unable to get my Anti-Virus to activate :(

Did you try System Restore? It's somewhere in the Control Panel.

Edit: go to Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, in the left pane click on System Restore, Restore my computer to an earlier time, next, find a restore point before you messed up your computer, then follow the instructions on the screen.

Yes, it is under ThinkVantage Productivity Center Data Protection and Recovery section. Then I received the following errors:
    - WIZRR MFC Application encountered a problem. Please tell Microsoft - Send Report or Don't Send
    - GUI MFC encounted a problem Please tell Microsoft - Send Report or Don't Send

I just can't seem to rollback my system to a previous date :(

Try this direct link for Lenovo Rescue & Recovery (English) package on the XP system. Occasionally Lenovo do some website maintenance which causes some old links to work improperly as you experienced.

Thanks so much for the Lenovo link. Sadly after I downloaded the update and the setup wizard extracted etc I get the following ERROR = " Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." *** I am not running this in safe mode***

So I then downloaded Windows Installer version 4.5 , then tried your link but I still got the Windows Installer Service Error message.

Any recommendations on how to fix this? Thanks so much!

Using System Restore as suggested should fix any issues caused by a bad installation.

    Did you try this?

Edit: I read you are having an issue with that not running.

    Try this:

Thanks I followed the instructions in "Safe Mode" but there were no restore dates, for me to Restore Back To

I then did an upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3 in hopes the "removed components of Win XP SP2" would be installed. Thankfully the installation went well.

Then when I tried to Install the link from Hearst555 I received the following ERROR message:- "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

Yes, thanks I followed the instructions and then rebooted. Then I received this error message:
    - "Rescue and Recovery Backup Service has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. "error signature: szAppName : szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : unknown
    szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000
Please tell Microsoft about this problem - Send Error Report or Don't Send

    AND

    -error message - Netwk.exe error

I then tried to launch and Install "Rescue and Recovery 4.23 [ML]" and then I received "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

I'm so frustrated as I have no idea how to fix this 4-day old problem

Also it could not Start SQL Server VSS Writer because the configuration is incorrect Error 14001

When installing the Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable (XP) does it give you the option to repair/overwrite the damaged Windows Installer service on your computer? I would give that a try first, though if that doesn't work you can try this guide to see if you can reactivate the service manually.

Afterwards I would try and reinstall the .NET Framework 3.5 again as the Thinkvantage tools are heavily dependant on the service. The .NET Framework 3.5 service is backwards compatible to the older 3.0 and 2.5 framework so hopefully it will clear any discrepancies from the older versions. The link is the full distributable version so it doesn't need the bootstrapper to download the remaining files via the network.

Thanks Hearst555! I performed another install of Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable (XP) just to see if I'd missed the option to repair/overwrite the damaged WI but what it did was scan and reconfigure, then it gave me the option to Accept or Don't Accept the Terms of Agreement. I rebooted and the problem/error messaging remained the same. So I moved on to Method#1 - the "msconfig" Services and completed the System Configuration. Restarted the machine and the error messaging was unchanged. So moved on to Method#2 Re-register Windows Installer - when I did a search of "msiexec.exe" I found 7 files but I did not remove any (since my penchant for the delete-button go me into this mess in the first place  ).

**EDIT** I followed the instructions for RE-registering of Windows Installer and Re-installing Windows Installer to the Letter with the only exception of installing WI 4.5 instead of WI 2.0.

I then proceeded to download and setup.exe of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 - which began its Uninstall, as an error occurred during setup. I then received the following error-message: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 has encountered a problem during setup. Setup did not complete correctly.
    "Error signature EventType : visualstudio8setup P1 : 35101
    P2 : 3.5.30729.01_orcas_x86_net P3 : mc P4 : inst P5 : f P6 : -

[11/12/10,22:58:06] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a. MSI returned error code 1601
[11/12/10,22:58:27] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0a is not installed.

Oh Hearst555 I'm at my wits end

Hmmm, try the .NET Framework cleanup utility which attempts to remove all traces of .NET Framework from your system including the registry. This is usually the last resort if all the standard uninstall methods fail without reformatting.

Thanks Hearst555 - sorry for my delayed response - I had to go out of town for a few days and did not take my laptop with me. I will read and then perform the cleanup, because if I don't do these Java updates and Adobe updates real soon a backdoor worm will find its way into my machine :( Please keep your fingers-crossed for my successful resolution.

    Many thanks!

I wasn't talking about recovery disks. WIndows seven and Vista has backups or system images as a regular part of the system.

Much GRATITUDE to everyone here for their patience and excellent solutions. I'm especially grateful to Hearst555 :notworthy:

I have Resolved the problem

Just in case any one else runs into this problem here is the resolution I used in combination with Hearst555's recommendations:

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > right-click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt, type (or paste) sc delete msiserver

    Reboot the computer.

Start, Run, services.msc and right-click on Remote Procedure Call (Not the one that says RPC Locator) and choose Properties.

Now click on the Log On tab and under Log on as:, choose Local System Account and tick the Allow this service to interact with the desktop checkbox. Then restart your computer and see if the problem goes away. - And it did go away
