I was thinking of getting one with a touchscreen off their outlet website.

I see a lot of people have issues with things like the touchpad but other than that is it ok to buy?

If not, are there any decent alternatives?

I'd say "yes" presuming one of these two options:

    a) You've tested the "clickpad" yourself and are OK with it OR

    b) You're up for swapping it with one from T450s.

Other than that, T440s was the most mature offering within the *40 series in my opinion.

    Happy shopping.

They are not 'bad' but yeah the trackpad is a point of concern, especially if you want to use the TrackPoint (which is virtually unusable). Also note that these are particularly tricky to open up, as the entire bottom is one piece and it's secured with plastic tabs all the way around. If you want to upgrade it, be ready to break a tab or two. Try to just get it from Lenovo in a state you won't want to upgrade for some time (12GB RAM and 256+GB SSD).

I've opened my T440s up three or four times and it's really not that scary as long as you have a plastic pry tool or two (and if you don't, you can get one for cheap on eBay. Very useful for any tablet/smartphone repairs as well. Haven't broken any plastic tabs, and you wouldn't be able to even tell that I've opened my T440s up before.

There are indeed mixed opinions on the trackpad. I haven't had problems with it at all, but now that the T450s is out, there is an option to swap in a T450s trackpad if you really do hate the T440s one.
