Anyone try out different intel 6205 wireless drivers and see if they have better battery life?

Build quality of the X220 seems great so far with one exception:

The plastic strip housing the power, volume, mic mute and thinkvantage buttons creaks when pressed. Thankfully not while using the buttons. But pressing the plastic between Thinkvantage and Power produces a nasty creak.

Does this part need to be removed to replace the keyboard? I had the keyboard replaced by my reseller so perhaps it hasn't been fitted properly (although it looks perfectly flush).

It's a pretty common issue with the X series (had that same flex in the X200 and my current X220). And it's not from improperly seating the keyboard as it is not removed when you remove the keyboard. It may be possible to wedge something to stop the flex, but that is only a theory :)

I see. Perhaps something Lenovo should consider improving for the X221 ;)

On another note, I've read posts debating the sturdiness of the lid. It looks and feels easily flexible, but I guess that's the point (light construction and improved shock absorption)? But is it of 'Thinkpad' quality?

Today my girlfriend almost put a bag full of groceries on my X220 (at least 2 kg), thankfully she ended up placing only her purse on it - black laptop on a black table is pretty much invisible with the lights out :p

This got me thinking - in the past, I've placed books 2 to 3 stacks high on laptops without problems, however their lids were thicker and more rigid. Would it be safe to do so with the X220 - and similarly, place it unprotected in a backpack along with books etc.?

I think everything is sturdy on my x220, zero complaints with build at all.

I wouldn't put anything on it though...or with any laptop, haha.

Fan on my X220 started to whine after upgrading to new BIOS. Before that it just nice. Though Lenovo reminded that don't upgrade BIOS if you are satisfied with your laptop but I decided to give a try and now kind of regret with my decision.

    Thanks for the tips!

Anyone here knows the reason why the X220s core i5 2520, (shiped in 17-jul with 1.16 bios) never get run higher 2501 mhz even the turbo mode has been enabled on Power managment with powered/battaried, mine never get into turbo mode, just from 700 - 2501mhz only. I don't expect to archive 3,2ghz as the chip was designed, but with turbo enabled , there should be some changes slighly over 2501mhz, right?

    Get a non-slim 90-watt adapter.

It will not disappoint with video editing. I edit multi-camera HD, AVCHD projects on this laptop (with an external monitor, of course.)

I use Sony Vegas Pro 10.

This is what the lenovo parts look up said:

    ThinkPad X220 (4291-WXZ)
    i5-2520M(2.5GHz), 4GB RAM, 320GB 7200rpm HD, 12.5in 1366x768 LCD, Intel HD Graphics, Intel 802.11agn wireless, WWAN option, Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, Camera, 6c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 32

I presume because it just says LCD, that its a normal LCD screen?

Thats not a normal screen then? I mean its not IPS but its from the IBM site so it must be safe right?

Would replacing the screen void the warranty?

Perfectly normal. IBM/Lenovo and most manufacturers use multiple suppliers.

Replacing the screen would void the warranty (if they found out).

What can I upgrade and not void the warranty?

    The IPS screen is matte.

Memory, hard drive, wifi card, battery, WWAN / msATA hard drive, palm rest with fingerprint reader if you don't have it.

Sorry, I meant the normal screen rather then an IPS. I was trying to differentiate them - I still think of one as matte and the other as IPS, even though I know both are matte. I hpe that made sense :D

So quite abit then - I might get the mSATA and some more memory

    Thanks once again.

    Hello.

I just bought an x220 of ebay and got the serial number and model number. How do I know if the IPS screen is the 2x2 option or the 3x3 considering it does not have a webcam and lenovo let's you configure the screen in both variants without webcam (3x3 only withou).

    Thanks.

The third antenna goes where the camera is (I imagine since you can't get a camera if you get 3 antennas). Take apart your lid/screen and see what you think.

Why don't you remove the display bezel (it's only two screws) and inspect visually? Compare with the picture from the hardware maintenance manual - page 98.

The screen bezel is the same, you just need the camera... Beware of ordering the camera directly from IBM though. I did it for my x201, and they sent me the camera only, without the metal mounting bracket or the transparent plastic cover plate. I don't think x220 needs a mounting bracket, but a missing cover plate would still be an issue. Better off ordering a complete kit from the helpful Chinese sellers on ebay, once they start stocking them...
