No, only the WWAN slot supports mSATA.

Yes, 04W3462 is the IPS screen.

Thank you very much for the swift reply.

Do these have an IPS display? If yes I am going to buy one of them tomorrow because both are almost 40 percent cheaper than the previous one.

No, it does not have the necessary interface for an mSATA drive. The X220t supports only one mSATA.

I have to admit the IPS screen is gorgeous. Having used a sony tz for the last four years the full size keyboard is great but unfortunately my X220 has a danish keyboard.
I am looking for a US english keyboard to replace it. Somewhere in this topic I read about X220 keyboards from various manufacturers.

I would like to know your suggestions.

    Thanks in advance.

There's three keyboards for the X220 - NMB, Chicnoy and Alps. The NMB is generally considered the best. The part number for the NMB is 45N2211.

The first rep didn't add the IPS, the second fixed that and removed my 15% off, and the third guy (who has his own email at Lenovo so that might have something to do with it) did it right.

Never had so much trouble ordering something before, I hope it is worth it. I plan on replacing the hdd with a ssd I got on sale from Newegg. Does anything else look off to anyone else?

Also I was wondering what the actual turn around time on orders usually is. The estimated date is the 14th and I upgraded the shipping, because I am leaving out of town the 16th.

Which drive did you get get at NewEgg? If it's a 9.5mm drive, it won't fit without modifications, which brings its own complications.

You need a HDD/SSD of 7mm height (or thickness). Most of the 2.5" laptop drives are of 9.5mm height. Some of them may be "modified" to fit the primary bay of the X220, but many users find that unappealing.

    Read this.

^Some will have a warranty sticker over a screw hole - like yours seems to. Others like the Intel do not, and actually just require the removal of the spacer piece and shorter screws. Having said that there are quite a few more drives at 7mm height now than there were six months or so ago, so mods can be avoided.

    Hi Everyone,
If I buy a X220 with one 4GB dimm, can I buy another 8GB dimm to pair with it (12GB total for W7 64bit), or does the old rule of matching sticks (4GB + 4GB) still apply?

Turns out they cancelled my order anyway. I called in again, went through the reorder process, they forwarded me to the credit card department since they said that was the problem. I was then informed that the addresses do no match, which is not true. I never ran into a company so unwilling to take money, they promptly cancelled the new order as well. I ordered a Dell last month same card/address no problems, this is obviously Lenovo. At this point I have spent quite a few hours in total trying unsuccessfully buy from them. Is this normal? Who can I contact (that isn't just a overseas callcenter) to get this resolved?

BTW anyone knows whether increasing the RAM from 4GB to 6GB will improve performance of the x220?

Thinking of using a Samsung 2GB module from another laptop to make it 6GB (the x220 has 2 RAM slots, right?). Then replacing the Samsung 4GB inside with a 4GB Corsair/Kingston/etc branded module. The original Samsung 4GB will then be replacing the 2GB module I will be taking out from the other laptop to give ithat laptop 8GB. I believe the timings of DDR3 are the same in Lenovo's laptops regardless of models. Is that right?

Will mixing different brands of RAM affect speed if the advertised timings are the same?

    Thanks.

Depends if RAM is your bottleneck. If you aren't hitting 80-90% RAM usage in your most intensive tasks, then you don't have a RAM bottleneck.

All Sandy Bridge notebooks theoretically support 8 GB sticks, rest is up to the manufacturer if they have BIOS support. There a couple users here with 16 GB RAM in their X220.

Adding another stick will help performance by making it dual channel vs single channel. Beyond that, it might help if you use memory intensive stuff or open a million browser tabs.

    Thanks for that.

Just looked at prices though and it's not cheap (not a surprise). It's only very occasionally that I bump up against 8GB so I think I'll stick with it for now....

    Hi everyone !

I have a question : I see that the HDD on the X220 ( and on the X1 too ), is 7 milimeters high.

But when I search for a 2.5 HDD I always find HDD 9 milimeters in height.

Is there HDD 7mm high or is there some "hack" to used an HDD 9mm ?

(I'm french sorry for my english)

You must buy 7mm drives. Seagate and Hitachi AFAIK are the only ones who have slim drives. Also Intel/Samsung SSDs have spacers you can remove to make them 7mm.

I'll give a shout out for the 7mm 500GB Hitachi Z5K500. While it's probably not the fastest drive out there, you don't need performance for storage and it works in the X220 without modification.

    Hello,

FYI my X220 (i7 / USB 3) is working fine with a 120 Gb mSATA OCZ Nocti drive.
The BIOS (1.28 - haven't tried earlier versions) sees the drive at startup and I was able to install Linux without any issue, although I did not test drive speed.
I plugged it to a DELL U3011 display using the displayport on the ultrabase and it works great at native resolution (2560 x 1600).

I have not tried Windows but my guess is that it works as well.

    I hope this will help.

Has it always been around $90? If I had known it was that cheap, I may have jumped on one sooner when I was in the States last year.

I'm looking at a used x220 today and can't find any info about the model number provided, 4290-W2S. Dude says it comes with an 120Gb Intel 320 Gen3 Solid State Drive. I think he nay be reading it wrong and it's actually a 160gb drive. Warranty expires in July of 2014 so that looks good. And he was asking $700 got him down to $600 cash.

I have bought an stand-alone external microphone that connects to the 3.5mm headphone port. As far as I know (since it is a combo port), it should automatically detects the external mic, but this is not the case. It is still getting detected as a headphone. When I check the recording devices. External Mic still shows as "not plugged in".

I have tried removing conexant driver and just used the windows driver but same thing. It is still getting detected as a playback headset and external mic is still showing "Not plugged in". I have played with the all the possible settings including SmartAudio to no avail. Am I missing something here?

Does this means I need to get a combo jack adapter in order to get my standalone external microphone working?? sigh!

    4290-W2S is supposed to have a 250GB 5400RPM drive. If it's got a Intel SSD, then it's a pretty good deal. I don't think they offered 160GB 7mm drives on the X220.

Yes. P. 96 of the X220 user guide. Only the dock supports a microphone in. Otherwise you need a headset or headset adapter/TRRS splitter.

Where did you find that info at? I search the Lenovo site for that model and found nothing. So now it makes me wonder if this has been opened up and tinkered with or it came from the factory as an upgrade. Not sure how easy it is to swap HDDs on the x220.

ZaZ is right. Originally came with a 250gb hdd. If he replaced it with an ssd that's not a big deal, it's an easy change and something most people in this forum have done to their machines. I'd make sure that this machine has an IPS screen though, that's most of the reason to get an X220 and not some other notebook.

Go to the support page on Lenovo's website and enter your machine type. All is revealed. I think swapping the drive qualifies as tinkering. It's quite easy.

got my thinkpad on tuesday, installed a OCZ Vertex 3 MAXIOPS drive with no problems. Might have a problem getting it out though. Also got a Intel mSata 310 80GB running Linux and Mac OS X

Well I picked it up this afternoon and so far so good. The previous owner installed an Intel 120gb SSD and put the 320gb drive in an external enclosure and threw in a new LG multi-function DVD drive. So for $600 I'm not doing to bad. Feels good to be back on a dedicated windows machine for work. I was using my MBP 13.3" and it was nice but a lot of my copier utilities wouldn't run correctly.

It has both metal and plastic parts. It's not all metal like the MacBook Pro's, but it is more durable.

I can tell you this about the durability, one will survive a fall and the other (made of aluminum) will likely get a large dent after hitting the ground.
