I know about the 7mm height limitation for 2.5" drives (HDD/SSD) in ThinkPad X220. In the not so distant past Lenovo used exclusively 1.8" SSD drives even in larger laptops with regular 2.5" bays. They used 1.8"-2.5" converters to accomplish this.

I wanted to ask, if by any chance would there be a user among you who would have a similar setup a who could possibly measure the height of these converters, whether they would fit in X220. As far as I know, there were two FRUs - 42W7888 and 42W8019 (see attachments).

Alternatively, is there any third-party converter that would fit in X220? The reason why I'm asking is because I have a spare 1.8" SSD disk. Thank you.

Possibly one of these although the info doesn't give the thickness. If necessary, it should be possible to file off some of the plastic.

Tsunade just bought one of these... the actual thickness is 9.5mm PLUS the added thickness of the rubber rails usually surrounding standard size ThinkPad drives. You will most likely have to remove some of the plastic to fit it in a 220.

i have a 42W7888 sitting on my desk and it's 10mm per my digital calipers without the rubber corner rails.   i wouldn't recommend this model.

the 42W8019 might fit or need the corner risers sanded down slightly.   from memory it's 9.5mm exactly.   i'm guessing is the model commander_wolf is referencing.

either of these adapters will work if disassembled and just the adapter board used.   at that rate john's adapter suggestion above would be one to consider if it passes both +3.3V and +5V.   i tried one of those very adapters and found it incompatible with the intel X18M because it didn't pass one of the voltage paths (but can't recall which path).   samsung SSDs worked fine with it.

I have a 42W7888 with Toshiba HG-2. As other had said, you can remove the housing and leave it with the adapter and ssd itself(which looks like what John is linking w/o the black plastic thingy, but what he link should be thin enough if My eyeballing is right ). Rest is just scotch tape :).

It's plastic and it IS thicker than 9.5mm with the anti-vibration nubs. You'll need to file some parts off to make it fit..
