A friend of mine has a Macbook Pro 15" (2.8Ghz) that has a decent screen. It is not IPS and its glossy, but looks okay otherwise. What is the best screen today on ThinkPad's, which model should I get? I bought my wife an SL510 and the screen is the worst I've seen on a laptop in a long time. Otherwise I love the unit.

The T510 and W510's FHD RGB-LED panel is the highest quality panel on a Thinkpad outside of the X201 Tablet's AFFS+ screens.

W510/T510 FHD and HD+ panels are a good match for 15" macbook pros. The FHD panels i've seen, however, all had some uneven backlighting when displaying all black on the screen. The gamut on FHD panels are also wider than Macbook Pro's so colors will look a bit more "radioactive". HD+ panels are decent, with gamut not as wide, but still with good contrast ratio.

I personally own an FHD W510 and like the panel very much.

If I get the ThinkPad X201 without the Multitouch panel, is that still good? The Multitouch option adds $275 to the price.

The x201 tablet uses ips. As pcunite say don't get the multitouch panel the panel will result cause you to have low viewing angle.

    Okay, looking at this table:
    http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf

It appears that all of the X201 tablet's have the high-end displays, it even says IPS, although it looks like you might get PVA sometimes. I will check and see if the X201 non-tablet has a nice screen. I don't really need the tablet feature.

The regular X201 does not use the same displays as the tablet, they use "normal" TN displays that are quite average/below-average quality. The non-multitouch X201t display is dimmer (I believe it is the "Entry" screen that you have listed) than the multitouch, but it still has great color accuracy and viewing angles.

I have some findings everyone might consider interesting... locating computing devices with IPS display technology takes quite a bit of research... I would love to see a proper write-up from a trusted source on this subject.

The following is my known list of IPS portable (all in one) 2010 tech (older versions may not have IPS):

    • ThinkPad X201 Tablet
    • HP 8740W EliteBook
    • Motion Computing F5
    • iMac, both sizes
    • iPhone 4
    • iPad

There's two screen for the base X201t. There's a Hydis AFFS and Samsung PVA display.
