I'm thinking about getting a Lenovo IdeaPad Y560. The US has a crazy offer where the final price is only $799.99, but since I don't live in the US I have to suffer the crappy Canadian price of $899.99.

    Lenovo IdeaPad i5-460M/500GB/ATI 5730/standard 3-hour battery life: link (IdeaPad Y560 Laptop - 06463RU, first column from left) - $999.99 - $100 (e-coupon) = $899.99 (free shipping)

I heard the Lenovo Y560 has some serious driver bugs (youtube), and a bug known as the "big cursor bug" that glitches the onscreen cursor that seems to affect a lot of people, as well as ridiculously low battery life.

My other choice is an Acer with almost the same specs except better battery life, and $40 cheaper, but looks much uglier than the Lenovo and has weaker speakers:

Acer Timeline X i5-460M/640GB/ATI 5650/6-7 hour battery life: link - $859.99 (buy in store)

What are your suggestions on these two? Thanks.

    Breakdown:

    Lenovo IdeaPad Y560:
    - Looks better
    - Slightly better speakers
    but
    - Heard about some driver problems
    - Short battery life
    - Heavier

    Acer Aspire TimelineX:
    - $40 cheaper and can get it immediately from store
    - Lighter
    - Longer battery life
    but
    - Weaker speakers
    - Ugly design

    It depends what you want..

The timeline's battery life is awesome compared to the poss 4.5 hours when using the intel hd graphics and the power set to super power savings mode.

I was also looking at both myself.

I just got my y560 from tiger direct i5cpu 5730 graphics / switchable, at an awesome price, and that was the reason i went for this, $750 including shipping..

I have the dancing pixels when you move a open folder around the screen, but its hardly noticable and it only shows up when im moving my browser around or a folder.. So thats a non issue for me. Plus no issues when playing games or watching movies.

I have not had the big cursor issue that some have had.

The lcd on the lenovo 1366x768 is good for what i spent on it.

I just love that i can play most games to the max or near the max settings.

The only other little gripe i have with the y560 is that the screen does not lock when you close it.

But over all for what i paid i got an awesome laptop.

Plus the speakers are freaking awesome on the lenovo... loud !

Personally i would get which ever one was at the best price at the time.

I think the acer timeline lappys have had their own share of issues just like the y560..

toss a coin and have fun with it.

Wow $750? That's even cheaper than the $300 off sale on the US Lenovo site. We only have a $200 sale which puts it at $899.99. What do you mean screen does not lock? You mean screen does not turn off or? Isn't that a setting you can change?
It seems that the monitor has quality issues in displaying different colors as well, many youtube videos to confirm it.
I guess there's no perfect laptop lol.

The screen is held closed by screen tension (and possibly magnets, I'm not 100% sure), which is standard for consumer grade laptops today. Only business laptops seem to still keep the physical mechanical locking mechanisms, from what I've seen.

Yeah, the Y560 monitor is definitely not anything to write home about. It's relatively low-resolution for its size (15") and has given some users issues that skooks mentioned.

Personally i would go with the acer timelinex 4820tg due to its size and awesome battery life. I own a y560 (i3+5730) which i bought for $649.99 + FS + 10% bing (i hate tax). If i had more money at the time and the acer 4820tg was available i would grab that easily.

As far as battery goes for the y560 on IGP, i get 4-5 hours on 80% charge and maybe 6+ on full charge. It helps if you squeeze your butt cheeks together =D.

That same configuration is available for $849 at Fry's Electronics (at least in-store). But do note that that configuration doesn't have switchable graphics (the i7-720QM chip does not have an integrated GPU on-die).

It was also $850 on the official Lenovo website with the coupon code for the i7 and $800 for the i5. However all these deals apply only to the US, Canada has little or no deals, as the cheapest i5 I've found is the one on the Canadian site for $899.99.
