I really like the T61 with the 15.4 WSXGA+ screen. This is the setup I've decided to go with:

    • Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz 800MHz 4MBL2)
    • Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
    • 15.4 WSXGA+ TFT
    • Intel GMA X3100 GM965 w/ WWAN
    • 2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
    • UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) with Fingerprint Reader
    • 100GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
    • CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 24X/24X/24X/8X Max, Ultrabay Slim
    • Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
    • 9 cell Li-Ion Battery

How much battery life will I see out of the 9 cell? It'll be for when I go to college so I'd like a lot of battery life. Do you think I should opt for the extra backup battery?

Another question, what kinds of times are we seeing for shipping on these if I ordered within the week? I start classes on September 4, do you think I would have it before then?

    Thanks

    Look, let me be honest.

The T60 was a great machine, and based on preliminary reviews and whatnot the T61 is on par with the T60.

You can get similar configs on 15" screens from just about any other company, so really the determining factor should be price and quality. IMO, having never owned a thinkpad, a T61 should be better in terms of quality then the competition. But thats just an opinion.

On the other hand, expect delays and frustration when ordering. You will get it by September 4 - (well... yeah you will) - but give it at least a month.

Patience is key if you want to buy a T61 - this is why there are so many angry customers. Why would someone buy a T61 instead of a T60 - to make ms word load 5 seconds faster, firefox run a bit smoother, etc. In other words, impatient *******s. No wonder they're having trouble waiting. :)

    not a fair statement
they cost about the same (maybe the T60 costs more) so why would we get last year's technology for more?

By 'on par' I meant quality - long lastingness. Not technology-wise. The innards of the T61 literally came out yesterday.

Thanks guys, what do the T61s get for battery life? And how does the battery life differ from the T60, if at all?

No idea on actual times - but it's important to consider size as well. The 4-cell is flush with the back, the 6 and 7 cell stick out.

I ordered the 4-cell so it wouldn't stick out. Unless the 7-cell offered like 2 years of battery life, I would never go for a battery that sticks out like that.

Oh, the above is about the 14.1"; it's the egocentric personality I have coming out. I bought a 14" so I assume everyone else has too :)

Not sure if the same applies for the 15"
