I am seriously considering returning my Y410p. Im starting to have buyer's remorse on it. I feel like I was manipulated by Lenovo in order to make a sale. Before I ordered it I asked if it had a matte screen. I was told yes, but it isn't it is extremely glossy and can be used as a mirror in the right light. I then asked if it had an mSATA slot, again I was told yes it does, but alas, it does not, it's a 42mm M.2 slot, which apparently won't have full capacity SSDs available for, as the 80mm is the standard for SSDs. Finally I asked the salesman if I could order it with Windows 7, he said he would add it after we completed the order, I received it with Windows 8. Now that I have had a few days to mess with it I have found a few more issues, The touchpad expressions are hit or miss, 2 finger tap does not work at all. The wifi is hit or miss, I have a 4 year old netbook that holds a more stable connection. Finally it does have a 750m, but the drivers are non-existant. I must use Lenovo's drivers in order to make the video card work, which isn't fun because I can't install windows 7 without drivers.

Can anyone please convince me that I didn't mess up and that my concerns will be nullified in the future? If I do return it I will be looking to replace it asap with another offering from elsewhere.

At its price point, nothing currently beats Lenovo Y410p.

As for the GPU driver issue, it's mostly because it's so new. Give it time.
And as for wifi issue, try updating its driver. It should fix the unstable connection issue.
And as for NGFF SDD, yeah, it's a real bummer.

If you are willing to pay substantially more, there are MSI GE40 and Alienware 14 both at 1200ish.

I'm returning mine also... a similar choice and price range (although Ivy Bridge based) is the Sony VAIO Fit 14 or 14E

Sony VAIO Fit sits in a different category from Y410p though.

It is done, I spoke with Lenovo, they sent me a return label and RMA number, I am getting a full refund. Im kind of disappointed, but I will be in the market for another system, the GE40 and the W230ST are the front runners.

You've got about 3 weeks until you get your money. They are terrible with refunding.

i hope they made improvements on GE series' cooling system. the temps of GE60 were bad, and considering that's a 15 incher, i can only imagine how hotter the 14 incher would get. the good side is that it's matte and has better track pad. i suggest to wait for in depth reviews before pulling the trigger. that's i would do. :)

im keeping my y410p for the following reasons:

    1. I prefer windows 8 over windows 8 (inb4 lots of flame, but win 8 has better performace and battery life, and a better file manager)
    2. Im planning to swap the 1TB HDD for a 120GB SSD
    3. Driver issues are caused by the fact that the laptop came out like 2 weeks ago. Updating them should fix it.
    4. I usually click my touchpad over tapping, since im used to oldschool touchpads

What does this mean in terms performance/or what what other computers offer? Sorry I am computer illiterate.

Nothing if you don't tinker with your laptop. You won't notice anything. It's just one less option for those who want to maximize what they have.

And now I am back, I am worse than Florida. I told my wife about me going through the return and she convinced me that it didn't make sense to return it.

I was looking at the MSI GE40 and the W230ST, she convinced me that it wasn't worth the extra ~$400+ for either. The MSI had a Matte screen, CPU was 6% slower, the GPU is about 15% faster, no back lit keyboard, and no mSATA. Meaning I would have to swap the DVD drive out to get a SSD and storage drive in it. But if that's the case, I can do the same thing with the Y410p, meaning the Y410p for my purposes is better suited as there MAY be an option for the M.2 to have a large enough SSD option. Also she thinks that I can get a matte screen protector that will eliminate the glare from the screen. The W230ST has the backlit keyboard and the mSATA slot, but it wont ship for another month or longer, it looks like it will be priced much higher than the $1200 range if you look at the posts made about the UK models, and it forfeits the optical drive, which isn't a huge deal to me, but its better to have the option than to not.

I don't get what you meant about worse than Florida lol. Check Force PCs on XOTICpcs you can buy W8 cheaper online and get a great warranty.. 16GC is my recommendation

I read in the reviews on the product page that the wife for this laptop doesn't support 802.11ac. Is that really bad? There is no way to support it in the future?

Thanks for making a bunch of great points. Obviously it's not a perfect laptop. Still, I'm thinking of getting one and wanted to know what you thought of the 900p screen. Some have said that it's faded and that the pixels look like a screen door grid pattern. I wish I could see one for myself before making the purchase. Other than being glossy what are your thoughts on the screen quality?

I'm going to have to second the underlined portion. There is a bit of a grid pattern on the screen, albeit not as bad as some older matte panels, but the contrast ratio is somewhat poor. Other than the WXGA++ resolution, there really isn't anything worthy of mentioning about this LG panel used.

If you want similar comparisons, look at the Thinkpad T420/430 or Elitebook 8460/8470's WXGA++ screens.

Was talking about the flip flopping that Florida tends to do. Sorry bad political joke.

My screen is passable. It isn't terrible by any means, the pixels are noticeable, but not like looking through a screen door as others have mentioned.

I agree with your wife. No point in returning the Y410p. For 14 inch, laptop, I consider it very good.

Actually, I'd consider Y400/w 750m better than Y410 due to the msata slot. It's got backlit laptop. GE40 does not. I favor matte screen also but in this case it's a moot point.

Now, if you consider GE60, that's a whole different story. GE60 is worth the extra.

Y400 only has 1366x768 res screen option though I believe. While the 1600x900 screen on the Y410p isn't great (Micaiah made a good comparison, it reminds me of the business-class T430/T420 or Dell E6430/E6420 screens, which are kinda meh), its still better than 1366x768

    @AGoff

did you buy the 1600x900 screen, if so how is it in terms of image quality besides the fact that it isnt matte. Also hows the performance of the laptop in applications like photoshop and games. Can it run starcraft 2 on native res on high with no lag? Thanks I am seriously considering to buy this laptop this summer, from pictures and also seeing my friend's Y500 the laptop design is pretty nice

Mine is 1600x900, the glare is pretty bad, but the screen is clear enough for me. Im not expecting $300 monitor quality on an $800 laptop. The processor is very good, much faster than my desktop's first gen i5. I can run LoL on ultra and was playing Farcry 3 on medium with reasonable framerates, SC2 will be fine. The video card causes some graphical flickering every once in a while, but that's not a huge deal to me because its probably more nvidia's driver than the laptop. I really do like it, I wasn't giving it a fair chance, while surfing reddit at work on it, I was getting ~4 hours of battery. I think a lot of people are bandwagoning with the hate, I was too. But after taking some time to actually use it, its an amazing laptop for the price, it performs better than I expected, it looks very clean, the screen is a bit weak, but again not as bad as people are complaining.

Yeah, you should keep it. Trust me on this. No 14 inch laptop is better than Y410p right now unless you want spectacular battery life.

1366x768 on 14inch is acceptable. I'd know since I've owned an old generation Y480. You don't want text to be too tiny on your screen. 1600 x 900 on 14 inch, I'd say that's the best combination.

There are plenty of options if you want 14 inch long-lasting laptop on battery, but there are few choices on gaming 14 inch laptop, and I'd rate Lenovo Y410p the best of its class and its price.

Thanks also would you happen to know what type of ram it comes with? Does Lenovo give us 1 stick of 8gb ram or 2 sticks of 4gb ram, because if it is 1 stick of 8gb it will only cost 55 plus tax to upgrade to the max opposed to 110 plus tax. Also do we have to use ddr3l sodimm or can we just use the regular, because i tried searching newegg and I can not find any ddr3l types.

    SODIMM 2x4 DDR3 1600MHz

You really do not need more than 8GB of RAM. I run 16 in my desktop, 8 is then dedicated to run a ramdisk for w/e game Im favoring this week. Load times are funny when the game is installed to the ram.
