Donated A31 Being an IBM we decided to gamble on an AC adapter. When it first turned on, all was fine. We turned it off to attach a mouse. Disappointed there is no PS2 connection. Found the USB mouse. Tried to boot up. A whirring sound, power light is on (I think) The little green Z is lit and the battery indicator? is orange. Turned it off, unplugged the USB mouse, again attempted to boot. Nothing happens but a faint hard drive sound. Three more attempts, same result. Left it for 30 minutes. Last attempt the IBM splash screen came up, then lots of scrambled video. There doesn't seem to be windows key to choose shutoff on this laptop so just hit the power off once again. Is it possible that the insufficient RAM (256) is not enough for testing? Any suggestions as to how to test this A31 would be appreciated.

ThinkPads didn't get a Windows Key until they were bought by Lenovo. 256MB should be sufficient for testing. You might be better off posting this over on ThinkPads.com. There's a lot more older ThinkPad users over there who may have some insight into your issue(s) and might have parts if you need to buy some. The crowd here tends to be much newer to ThinkPads and it's been a long time since I've seen an A series ThinkPad.

I didn't see a Thinkpad forum. What group would that be under. And Thanks for the referral.

It's a different ThinkPad forum outside of Notebook Review's forums. They're a bit more hard core concerning ThinkPads and generally very helpful. I think you're much more likely to find what you need over there. Good Luck.
