Anybody have experience with the Thinkpad backpack? Is it good enough to use as a college backpack, or is it a freebie that should be discarded? Or should I opt for the nylon bag or the expander bag?

But I'm interested in the backpack and people's experiences with it. Any online reviews?

Any ThinkPad belongs only in leather. Even the R series. Discard the backpack at your local salvation army and get the tax voucher.

why? why would you want a leather backpack.

My 600E came with a Jansport backpack with a padded sleeve in the rear compartment. I still use that with my T43.

You're talking of the R series as if it's a very mediocre thinkpad laptop. Those who are familiar with the thinkpad series know that R series infact is very close to the T series performance and design wise. Now if you were talking about the R51e, then i can understand. ;)

    Actually, I disagree entirely.
    1) Leather is an attractive material, but nylon is much better suited for an academic backpack. Polyester works, but nylon is the way to go. This is especially true if one wants water bottle pockets. For me, two are absolutely required.
    2) The ThinkPad backpack has a number of thoughtful features. It has two water bottle pockets, an opening that doesn't force you to struggle to pull your computer out, a good organizer, various computer-oriented organizational features, etc. I also like that it's low-key. I'm not sure whether or not it's obvious that the wearer is carrying a backpack (I'd be interested to hear others' thoughts on that), but is certainly much less so than with the various tech-looking backpacks.
    3) If you're choosing between those three (I realize it's a promo add-on), you are choosing between backpack and messenger; in my mind, there's no competition: backpack blows messenger away in terms of practicality.

Whatever you get, definitely post feedback.

I never said anything about a leather backpack. And the T 42/3's are far superior to any R series IBM. In looks alone, it's no contest. My friend has an R52 and every time he see's my T43 he feels inadequate.

Great backpack to any laptop is Osprey Flux or Focus. It doesn't even look that 'geek'...

Maybe your friend is suffering from inferiority complex and doesnt realise that apart from the weight and case material used, the R series is the closest to the T series. Is that his first ever experience with the thinkpads? See guys this is what i meant when i previously mentioned that some people have no idea about the R series and think it is the thinkpad budget line. LOL

Size and plastic mean everything. The R series is inferior based on fit and finish. We are supposed to be talking about backpacks here.

I have a Victorynox bag... EXCELLENT padding and extrem;ely stylish bag. Construction wise, my Waterfield Sleeve is better though :)
