    Hi,

Just got a new E540 today. It's going back to fix a keyboard that clunks and sticks on some keys rather than being smooth, but my reason for posting is the touchpad. I've been a 10 year old Thinkpad user. I have to say until this unit I've been a T user, but the touchpad on this new Thinkpad floats and is in effect a massive button.

When you click it the whole thing rattles and sounds atrocious. Yes, I'd go that far. Not at all the solid, crisp sounding quality I got used to from previous laptops.

Is this touchpad the same one they use in all models or just something cheap in the E line?

I'm having them look at the touchpad too but want to know if I should return this and get a different range or even look elsewhere for a quality sounding unit.

    Thanks, RW

    Edit:

Some other touchpad issues which rubbed me:
    - Synaptics driver shows not compatible with this version of Windows out of the box (and System Update doesn't have an update)
    - When you press the massive button down, the pointer moves on screen
    - This unit also looks to have a fault as the left click got stuck 'on' a couple of times.

The notebookcheck review of your thinkpad model praises the touchpad quite heavily. I suggest you inquire with the tech support guys and tell them that either your machine is not built right in terms of case, or you just ask them to replace the touchpad, since it doesn't sound like yours is up to scratch.

To disable the touch-pad, go to the program "Lenovo Settings". Within there, you will see 6 icons arranged in a box. The last one should have touch-pad under it. Blue means enabled and grayed out with a slash means disabled. Make sure that you have a working mouse nearby. Click the touch-pad icon and you have successfully disabled your touch pad. Click it again to re-enable.
