Hi folks,
This is my first post here (please, hold your applause). I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of DVD player/burner the Edge 14" came with? I should be receiving it tomorrow and I wanted to run out and get some DVDs (I want to create the recovery discs ASAP).
I know there are a lot of formats out there... -R, -RW, +R, +RW. I'm not sure what format is right for me drive. This is what my invoice says:
75Y0238 SBB DVD RECORDAB8XMAXDUALLAYER
I've tried looking up that part number but I don't get any results.
Any ideas? Also, is there a particular brand of DVDs that are good and reliable, or are they all pretty much the same? Thanks.

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
It should be a normal optical drive. Any disc will work, just make sure when you make the recovery discs you use all the same type.
My preferred brand is Verbatim media, yes they cost a bit more than other media, they are higher quality. As a wise man once said, you get what you paid for. -
*Claps anyways*
Welcome!
I like to use the RW as you can wipe a disk clean and use it for something else, thus saving you some money. Although RW disks can sometimes fetch more money compared to the R, so I would look at how many disks you may need and see what the prices are for both of them. (Assuming you want the RW in the first place.)
BTW: What model did you get? AMD or Intel? -
So the drive can read/write both -RW and +RW? I thought most drives could only read one or the other, although I've heard there are some that can read both. I'm assuming it's -RW since that's the older and more common format.
I ordered the Intel model. I'm pretty excited for it. Here are the specs:
-Intel Core i5-480M (2.66 GHz)
-4GB DDR3 RAM (upgradeable to 8GB)
-500GB HDD, 7200rpm
It should be a significant upgrade over my T-42, which served me very well for 5.5 years, but is now dying (GPU failing). That beast got put through 3 years of classes and it got treated pretty rough. The Edge is pretty much going to be a "stay-at-home" laptop, moving mostly between the desk and the couch. I'm sure the build quality isn't as good as the T-42, but I hope I can get 5 years out of it. I bought the Edge because I wanted a relatively cheap laptop that had a Trackpoint. -
Go into device manager and it should tell you which drive model it is. You can google the model number and that should give you the specs. Most likely it's a dual layer DVD+/-RW drive, meaning you can read and write all DVD and CD formats.
