I wish Lenovo would make one....anyone else? I know large notebooks are not big sellers but on the flip side it would be nice to have a choice. Lenovo has ingnored the catagory...at least here in the US. Dell offers a 17" in all its lines. I would love to see a Edge 17 to compete with the Vostro 37xx.

    Am I the only one?

i wouldn't mind a Thinkpad T700, the design of the Thinkpad Edge is not really suited to large size laptops, it is more suited for laptop between 11 and 14 inches. Anything larger you are really pushing the limit of the casing design of the Edge laptops.

I'd like to see a return of the Ideapad Y700 series...but with a real gaming GPU.

They had a neat idea with the Game Zone keypad that should have been picked up and improved on by other gaming notebook makers.

+1 what lead_org said, 15" already looks too big and makes an impression that it will fall apart under its own weight IMO.

If they redesign their Edge line, then 17" could be interesting option.
Otherwise I agree with lead_org, T700 would be awesome machine, given if you can make it considerably thin for 17" if you take into account its chassis size, cool thing Id think about buying instead of W700 which seems to be too bulky, heavy and expensive as well!

I think the reason why a "T710" (a 17" "laptop" that is less of a powerhouse than the W701) doesn't exist is because there'd be little demand from companies, which are the primary users of Thinkpads. Few business users even have 15" laptops, while most have either the T410 or X201. From a marketing standpoint, an Edge 17 would make more sense, since it would be more consumer-focused (which is why, I think, HP and Dell both have 17" ProBooks and Vostros, but not Elitebooks or Latitudes).

Huh? HP EliteBook 8740w and Dell Precision M6500 both have 17" display, 1920x1200 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio.

I suppose one could think of 3 general categories: consumer, business and workstation. The consumer notebooks catered to "bigger is better for games" desire would have 17" option. The design workstations would offer 17" option for larger workspace. However, the business laptop category seem to be most practical at 14" - anything smaller and lighter would enhance mobility.

Back when Ideapad was the ThinkPad consumer line they had a 17" machine...there was little demand for it because it was marketed as a gaming notebook but only had options for a Mob. HD2600, Mob. HD3650, or a GMA4500MHD. Far from the best GPU of their day. ;)

They did get the Extreme CPU options right though.

8740w and precision m6500 and w701 are workstation laptops.

Yeah, thanks for the correction, I failed to accurately write what I was thinking. What I wanted to say was that both the Elitebook 8740w and Precision M6500 are workstation powerhouse laptops that are in line with the Thinkpad W701, however, there are no 17" general business laptops from either of the three companies (ie, Latitude or Elitebook p-suffix integrated graphics models).

Dell and HP, however, do offer prosumer/small-business-level 17" laptops in the form of the Vostro 17" model and the ProBook 17" model, whereas Lenovo does not offer a 17" L-series or Edge model.

I saw 15 inch model. In my opinion, the assembly is not neat enough. I can see that the silver rim is " breaking " in some area (DVD area and above e-sata) and not properly aligned. It is totally a mess. Exception on the 13 inch model, the silver rim is almost perfect, well it does not have DVD drive though.

It seems that the bigger the laptop, using Edge design, the silver rim will not form a good line across the body. You will find breaks and disalignment in some area of the rim, and to me that is a mess. I cannot imagine what 17 inch model will look like.

Well Voodoo and Alienware were all started by some computer enthauasiats and had a large following before they were acquired by these tier one computer companies. Is there any other niche gaming laptop brand that produce decent gaming laptops that Lenovo could potentially think about taking over?

Or Lenovo could follow Acer or ASUS and name their top end gaming model after italian supercar brands. How about Lenovo Pagani edition all carbon fiber body...
