Thx. I was not sure how the 3000 would handle Civ 5. I'm still playing Civ IV because I have older hardware.

You can get a bit of a boost with the 3000 if you upgrade your RAM.

Good post. The batteries of the E420 and E420s do appear to have the same capacities. I guess the question would be whether the E420s typically uses less wattage than the E420 to accomplish the same tasks. If so, that might account for the extra hour of battery life Lenovo claims on their site.

Right now, with my brightness set at 8 (out of 15), my wifi on, and both Firefox and Chrome open, I'm running between 8 and 10 watts/hr. Assuming a max capacity of 48 Wh, that should theoretically give me about 5 hours. But I'm pretty sure I'm not getting that.

By the way, what do you get with your 9 cell battery? And how much does it weigh? Consider there's only a 1/2 pound difference between the models and battery life was one the most important factors in my decision, I'm starting to wonder if I chose poorly.

One quick thing: I figured out how Laptopmag.com got 7 hours on their battery test. They do their tests at a screen brightness of 40%, which on this computer means setting 6 (out of 15). Unfortunately, as those of you who own an E420s know, there are very few environments in which you'll be able to see this screen at setting 6, especially with all the glare from the infinity glass.

Take your E420s to a coffee shop and you're going to need to be at 12+.

Sorry if I was not clear, I decided to get the basic E420 because of the possibility of upgrading to a 9 cell battery, if I had ordered my E420 from Lenovo directly I would have paid the 50 dollars for the 9 cell, but I got my E420 at Office Depot for $630 after taxes, so it has the 6 cell battery. Sometime down the line, like when the battery is down to 80 percent capacity for degradation I will get the 9 cell.

I wouldn't say choosing the E420S is a poor decision, it is nice and thin and the materials it is made out of are higher quality. And I haven't seen the Infinity Glass screen so that to me could be a plus. But for me it came down to money and the Office Depot deal was so cheap, and I am still in college so money is always tight.

Coffee shop 12+, true that, but I work security, I sit at a guard post on the road, The whole thing is surrounded by windows, half the time 15 doesn't work and the direct glare of the sun doesn't let me use the laptop at all. I am basically in a room were their is more window than wall.

My touchpad works okay now after a number of driver updates (and some settings tweaks), but it seems like others continue to have problems with it:

Nobody has imported an E420S from another country, so as to be able to have an AMD 6630M?

I've thought about it, but it's not worth the extra $$$... Starting to doubt whether Lenovo will release it with the 6630M

I would bet the USA will not get the 6630 in the E420S, maybe the E430s will get a gpu, maybe... we will find out next year once Intel releases Ivy Bridge, no reason to update the Thinkpad Edge line until then. Right now if u want a 14 inch gamer, get the HP envy.

Asked a rep to find out for me if the 6630m is available yet. Rep took 5 minutes, came back and gave me the usual: its not offered in the US.

6630m + lcd mod (one used in the m14x, high contrast ratio) = the best gaming notebook with a trackpoint that money can buy.

Lets take a vote, who after buying an E420 or E420s, wishes they could have bought a T420 or T420S because you wish your laptop felt like a tank instead of a plastic laptop. I really wish that I had a T series I want to be able to move my laptop around without feeling like I could break it.
That being said, I really love the E420 keyboard, I don't know if I would like the T series keyboard as much.

Also T series = AMAZING battery life.

I am surprised, no one wanted a T series, everyone would rather have an edge.

I noticed that the t420 and e420 share the same 1366x768 lcd panel, that should mean that the upgraded 1600x900 lcd can be put in both the e420 and e420s.

Hi. I am new to this forum and have been going thru the discussion. As I have browse thru most business notebook, this is probably the only laptop that offer a better graphic card. Apparently, edge 420s comes with a AMD 6630 as an optional which is great. But 1 slight confusion here is the screen type. It was published in their PSREF website stating that the screen now is anti glare display with glossy infinity glass. What exactly does it converted into? Has anyone recently buy the unit with this screen type. Really appreciate that to get a picture of how such screen looks like.

Currently there is a shortage of 7200 rpm drives in the world due to the Thai flood, if it is only delayed by 2 weeks then you can thank your lucky star. In Australia the deliver is backlogged to March next year in some cases, and Lenovo Australia is halving the SSD upgrade price of the 128 gigs to 148 dollars to overcome the issue of hdd shortage.

the notebook came and i plugged in the power cord. firs 15 minutes i cannot turn on the computer. then it finally starts to charge it. then after 30 minutes i press the turn on button, and i almost had a heart attack. the screen was green with lines. i dont know if it is broken, so i finished the first startup of the windows. i checked the drivers if there are not installed but they were. i turned it off. i am afraid that i have to send it back. for me, it seems to be some cable is broken wich connects the screen to interface. or might just be a driver problem.

ok i am sending it back.it is sad that the quality check of the lenovo let this notebook pass...
