Does anyone have an idea where to order an IDE-to-ATA adapter for the Thinkpad Hard Drive Bay Adapter (for T61) in order to hook up an IDE harddrive from my old T40 to the Adpaters serial ATA connector?

There is a bit of room in Hard Drive Bay Adapter amd I am sure others have faced this issue as well. Thanks.

Are you sure there's enough room? there's probably loads of those adapters cheap on ebay. Make sure you get the right one, though, some are meant to plug ide drives on sata controllers, and others the other way around, and only a few work both ways. good luck.

You are looking for an IDE to SATA adapter which doesn't exist at least not in the form that you need.

Your best bet is to purchase an external USB case for the IDE drive. You should be able to pick one up for less than $20.

They do exist, I have one or two. They do fit as well, however, you cannot do the reverse (put a SATA drive in a T40 series). I currently have a ATA drive in the UltraBay of my T60p, as my company didn't see the need (nor did I) of replacing my 2nd hard drive. The ASM number is 62P4553 and the FRU is 62P4552.

An external USB case will probably be cheaper, as duffy mentions. I believe the hard drive sleds are about $45 instead of $25.

    Well there you go :)

LaptopGuru, does that ultrabay slim 2nd hard drive adapter come with an integrated sata - ide bridge then?

If I got it right, ibmlaptopquestion (funny nick - are you still thinking of staying around here after this issue is sorted? ;)) already has a sata (that is sata to sata) ultrabay slim adpater and he was thinking of getting one of these

to fit his already existing pata drive. Sorry if my assumption is not correct.

The OP was asking for an IDE-to-SATA adapter for an existing SATA Ultrabay Slim HDD adapter which does not exist.

what doesn't exist? I think the OP should clarify exactly what he meant as this thread's not clear enough.

Regardless, the OP is going to have to purchase either an Ultrabay slim HDD adapter for an ATA/IDE drive or an external USB case. The Ultrabay would probably be the more ideal solution, but it's also the pricier option of the two.

Ack, you are right, I did misread slightly. No, there is no way to put an adapter on an IDE drive and install in the main hard drive bay of the T61. Yes, you can install the PATA hard drive in the ultrabay of a T61. The ultrabay itself has PATA support and SATA support, as the optical drives and older ultrabay devices need PATA support. The adapter, therefore, does not need its own bridge chip.

Thank you for all the helpful comments (and yes, I have been on this forum for some time but never posted).

Clarification: I am trying to insert the HD from a T40 (IDE) into the HD Ultrabay Adapter of my T61 (which is serial ATA). What I am looking for is a bridge/connector which would allow me use this serial ATA Ultrabay Adapter with the IDE drive. There's ~1/3 of an inch room between the IDE male connector pins and the ATA female connector.

An external USB drive will work as well but I already have the serial ATA HD adapter.

    Thanks

You should just buy the PATA adapter (part number above). I don't think you will have much luck with adapting the SATA Ultrabay adapter. Like I mentioned earlier, the PATA adapter works great in the T6X series.
